European Union backs US-Iran talks, but nuclear deal must stay - Mogherini”

It said the cyberattack went ahead after President Donald Trump had called off a retaliatory military airstrike against Iran for shooting down a United States drone.

Macron had hoped that the two leaders could meet within weeks in NY, in hopes of saving the 2015 nuclear deal, which Trump unilaterally abandoned in 2018.

The US has since backed out of that agreement and now wants to sign a new one that would eliminate Iran's ability to produce nuclear weapons.

The Iranian president initially seemed receptive to the idea, telling a conference that same day in Tehran, "If I am to meet someone and that meeting would solve the problems my country, I will not hesitate to do so because it is in the principle of national interest".

Rouhani said on Tuesday there would be no talks with the United States until all sanctions on Tehran were lifted.

The nuclear deal has been in jeopardy since the United States withdrew from it a year ago and re-imposed economic sanctions, seeking to push Tehran into wider security concessions including curbs on its ballistic missile program.

Since May, the Pentagon has deployed a carrier strike group, a bomber task force and an additional 2,500 troops to the Middle East as Washington accused Iran of attacking oil tankers and plotting against US interests.

The first phase started on May 8 and the second phase on July 7.

The Trump Administration, which is closely allied with Iran's rivals Saudi Arabia and Israel, has demanded far-reaching changes from Iran beyond its nuclear programme including ending support for groups around the region such as Lebanon's Hezbollah militants and Yemen's Huthi rebels.

"When the regime in Iran is ready to talk about that, then there will be a meeting", he added. "Those who rightly condemned Obama in 2013-2015 for offering premature sanctions relief to the regime in Iran, instead of increasing the pressure, should be all over this", he tweeted.

"While Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was making his way to France for a surprise visit at the G7 summit on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his team scrambled to make sure President Trump wouldn't meet with him", reports the American-based Axios news outlet, citing USA and Israeli officials as its sources.

"Manipulative of Macron to do this and very insincere". Trump said he considered a cyber attack a more proportionate response to the downing of the USA drone than air strikes.

The June 20 strike against the marine traffic system was reported to have been carried out hours after Iran shot down a U.S. Navy RQ-4A Global Hawk drone with an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps surface-to-air missile that was sacked from near Goruk, Iran.

"Macron is right to try to assist in opening a channel between Washington and Tehran", tweeted Burns. The two sides haven't had diplomatic relations since 1979.
