FTC probes marketing practices of e-cigarette maker Juul”

FTC investigators are looking at whether Juul is engaged in deceptive marketing, including targeting minors or using influencers, according to a Reuters report. Around this time a year ago, we reported on the company's plans to use Bluetooth geofencing to automatically shut down Juul devices around schools; a move the e-cig maker hoped would curb the spread of its products among underage users. "Don't use the product".

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that the Federal Trade Commission is investigating Juul's early marketing campaign and use of social media to promote its products. Last year, the Food and Drug Administration conducted a surprise inspection at Juul's San Francisco headquarter and seized documents.

Neither the FTC nor Altria, the tobacco giant that in December invested $12.8 billion for a 35 percent stake in Juul, has commented on the FTC report. As for the influencers, the spokesman said: "Our paid influencer program, which was never formalized, was a small, short-lived pilot". And while tobacco use among Filipino adults has dropped roughly 6 percent from 2009 to 2015, the Global Youth Tobacco Survey revealed that underage smoking has increased among children aged 13 to 15 years old.

E-cigarette and e-liquid maker Juul has been grappling with this issue for some time now. Last year, one in five US high school students reported vaping in the previous month, according to government survey figures.

The US House of Representatives and some state attorneys general have also launched separate investigations into the company's promotion practices.

Juul says it's partnering with retailers to implement the Retail Access Control Standards program (or RACS) - "the strictest age-verification system ever required for age-restricted products", said CEO Kevin Burns.

"Don't start using nicotine if you don't have a pre-existing relationship with nicotine", Burns stated. Throughout Thursday's interview, Burns once more acknowledged that the long-term well being results of vaping are usually not recognized, however argued that his merchandise are screened and thought of secure. Neither Juul nor any other e-cigarette has yet been approved by the FDA to help people who smoke traditional paper-and-tobacco cigarettes quit.

He also responded to questions about whether Juul products are toxic or not, adding: "We do toxicology testing on all of our products".
