Ko Jin-young's 114-hole bogey-free run comes to an end

Ko Jin-young's 114-hole bogey-free run comes to an end”

Koh missed a three-foot putt on the ninth hole at the Columbia Edgewater County Club in OR, ending her impressive run, which is the LPGA's longest known streak to date.

The world No. 1 looked mortified when the ball dribbled left and barely touched the hole.

Ko had not dropped a shot since the second hole of the third round of the Women's British Open, where she finished third.

"I knew if I kept doing what I was doing and hitting good shots and just holing a couple putts here and there that you could post a really good score".

The run was on Ko's mind from the third round in Canada and in some respects she was nearly relieved it was broken.

Ko had five birdies and 13 pars in her opening round as she attempts to climb back up the world rankings after struggling for most of the season. "I don't need to think about bogeys".

She continued by saying that now that the streak is over, she feels more free mentally, and can focus in on her Friday round in Portland.

"I did 114 holes and then done". It's cool, especially new record, something like that. "So I want to do again, 115 holes bogey-free round hopefully".

As it happened, her bogey was the lone dropped shot in a four-under 68 that left her four behind the leaders, Australian Hannah Green and South Korean Hur Mi-jung.

Of the pre-tournament favourites, Sung Hy Park and Brooke Henderson opened with rounds of 67 while the women's game's number one player, Jin Young Ko, is another shot back.

The South Korean's run, which the LPGA believes to be its longest, beats the PGA Tour record of 110 bogey-free holes set by Tiger Woods in 2000.

Since her breakthrough LPGA Tour victory at the KPMG Women's Championship it has not been all plain sailing for Green although there was a break of a month immediately after her win to take in all that comes with being a major champion.
