Most popular baby names in 2018 revealed”

Fewer than half (45%) of babies had a name within the top 100 lists in 2018, down from two thirds (67%) in 1996.

Last year, 118 babies named Alexa were born, ranking the name 380th on the list of most popular girls names.

14 baby boys in Ipswich were called Oliver previous year, 12 were named Harry, 11 were called Archie, and there were 10 Alfie's, Charlie's and Finley's.

But, Oliver and Olivia have both retained their title on the number one spot for 2018.

In our area, Olivia was the most popular girls name in west Norfolk, Breckland and east Suffolk, while in Norwich it was Amelia and in South Norfolk it was Isla.

The most popular baby names in 2018 have been revealed - what does Ipswich's data reveal?

The top 10 list for boys was completed by Noah, Jack, Leo, Oscar and Charlie.

In north Norfolk, Ivy and Phoebe were the joint most popular girls names, Sophia, Isabella and Amelia were in Great Yarmouth and Ava and Grace were in Broadland.

For girls, Olivia proved to be the most popular name for a third year in a row.

Analysing the top 100 names of boys and girls of 2018, there were a number of new entries in the top for both genders.

Ada, Delilah, Ayla, Zoe, Margot and Felicity entered the top 100 names for girls in 2018. This year marks the first time that Arthur has entered the top ten since 1920, and Ada is now in the top 100 girls' names, which hasn't happened for an entire century.

However, it seems that many traditional names have fallen out of favour with new parents, with boys names such as Kenneth, Roger and Keith, and girls names such as Christine, Jean and Maureen not appearing in the top 1,000 baby names.

Nick Stripe, from the ONS, said: "The growth in the use of technology assistants in our homes may help to explain why the number of baby girls named Alexa has more than halved compared with 2017".

"Communicating with young children can be hard enough at the best of times".

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed that TV drama Peaky Blinders might have inspired some of England and Wales' most popular baby names.
