Pope gets stuck in Vatican elevator, freed by firefighters

Pope gets stuck in Vatican elevator, freed by firefighters”

Pope Francis kisses a baby as he leaves St. Peter's Square at the Vatican after his weekly general audience, Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2019.

Addressing the crowd, the Pope said there had been a "drop in voltage and the elevator stopped".

The surprise announcement was made at the Pope's weekly Sunday address, where he said that the ceremony to invest the cardinals will take place on October 5.

"A round of applause for the fire brigade", he told the crowd.

Television networks in Italy which broadcast the prayer live had been concerned the unprecedented delay might have been due to health reasons, AFP news agency reports.

It is believed to be the first time a Vatican head of state, who leads the world's 1.2 billion Catholics, has been stuck in a lift.

In 2015 two nuns were reported to have survived three days trapped in a lift in Rome without food and water. He had been stuck in an elevator for about 25 minutes.

The newcomers hail from North America, Central America, Africa, Europe, and Asia as the Argentine pontiff gradually shapes a less European college of cardinals.

The Tablet's Vatican expert Christopher Lamb said the pope's nominations "reflect his priority to build bridges with other religions... and to support migrants".

Pope Francis will elevate 13 Roman Catholic prelates to the high rank of cardinal next month, including 10 "cardinal electors" under 80 years old and thus eligible to vote in an eventual conclave to choose his successor.
