Astros' Verlander pitches third no-hitter of career

Astros' Verlander pitches third no-hitter of career”

Justin Verlander became just the sixth pitcher in Major League Baseball history to throw three no-hitters in his career on Sunday, as he blanked the Toronto Blue Jays with a masterful 120-pitch, 14-strike out performance.

On Sunday he struck out 14 batters and allowed just one base runner - on a one-out walk to Cavan Biggio in the first inning.

Verlander threw a season-high 120 pitches, mixing a fastball that reached the upper 90s miles per hour with a sharp curve.

"Some of the guys I've idolized, " Verlander said.

While Verlander now joins a small cadre of pitchers who have hurled three or more no-hitters, the top record-holder belongs to Nolan Ryan, who completed seven career no-hitters.

Sunday's game was tied 0-0 heading into the ninth before Abraham Toro's two-run homer broke the deadlock.

This was the fourth no-hitter in the majors this year.

His last no-hitter was also against Toronto, in 2011, when he was throwing for the Detroit Tigers.

The 36-year-old Verlander leads the majors in strikeouts and innings. The last one was a combined effort by Houston's Aaron Sanchez, Will Harris, Joe Biagini and Chris Devenski (9) against Seattle on August 3.
