At least 30 people trapped on burning boat off California coast”

Coast guard and fire department personnel from Ventura County are rushing to assist people on a 75ft boat near Santa Cruz Island, close to the cities of Santa Barbara and Los Angeles.

Numerous fatalities have been reported, according to Bill Nash the Ventura County PIO.

The Coast Guard and other agencies are responding. "I don't have an exact number", Nash said. "More details will be available later as this operation continues".

An update said, "There were 34 people on board and the Coast Guard has rescued five".

Five people, believed to be crew members, were rescued, including one person who suffered minor injuries, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. The vessel was reported as being on fire.

Santa Cruz Island is part of the Channel Islands, and it sits just over 30 miles from Ventura.

Five people have been rescued and 30 people are now missing, the Santa Barbara Fire Department confirmed to ABC News.
