Djokovic forced to retire, Wawrinka in the quarterfinals

Novak Djokovic's US Open title defence came unstuck on Sunday when a nagging shoulder injury forced the world No 1 to retire from his fourth-round match against Stan Wawrinka, prompting a chorus of boos from the crowd at Flushing Meadows.

It was obvious then that there is possibility for Djokovic to retire, although he started the third set well.

It didn't seem fair that Djokovic left Arthur Ashe Stadium for the final time in 2019 under a shower of boos and jeers, given how many electric moments he had produced for the night crowd in Gotham over the years.

"I feel really sorry for Novak, he's a good friend, an incredible champion and we've had an wonderful battle over my career".

Djokovic and Wawrinka are good friends, so obviously the two understand each other. "I'm happy to be back", said Wawrinka, who will meet fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals. "I was quite confident with the level I had but you never know when you are playing the number one player in the world". For his part, Federer has to win his quarterfinal match against Grigor Dimitrov.

Djokovic was seeded number one and seeking a fourth championship in NY. I was feeling great on the court. It was a rematch of the 2016 US Open final, which Wawrinka won in four sets. "It does also put a certain level of responsibility to me as well, because I am aiming to do that".

"I feel sorry for him, but I want to keep my level tonight".

He's been playing very good tennis, It's going to be a very interesting match, I'm sure. He rebounded from an early break to win the final five games of the first set and never let up from there, finishing it off with a backhand down the line in a third set that lasted just 21 minutes.

It was Djokovic's sixth retirement at a Grand Slam, his first at the US Open and his first since Wimbledon 2017; his most recent Slam retirement before that was the 2009 Australian Open. The No. 8-seeded Williams blasted 38 winners and won almost 80 percent of her first-serve points in a match that lasted a little more than an hour and a half. "It's tough to say but yeah, probably my worst match against him I've played". "I'm happy to be in the quarter-final and happy to play against him".
