Five killed, including shooter, 21 injured in West Texas shooting”

As the United States grappled with yet another mass shooting event on Sunday, President Donald Trump said that background checks on gun purchasers would not have prevented recent gun violence in the country. Combs said the gunman might have entered the theater if police had not killed him. The suspect continued shooting at innocent civilians all over Odessa before making his way to Cinergy on Highway 191 where he shot an Odessa police officer and a Midland officer.

Authorities have not identified the victims or the gunman, describing him only as a white male in his 30s who was known to police. The injured included three law enforcement officers, as well as a 17-month-old girl who sustained injuries to her face and chest.

"At this point I can tell you we do not believe - we do not believe - there's any connection to any domestic or worldwide terrorism", the FBI's Combs said.

The family thanked first responders and physicians including those at the University Medical Center in Lubbock, where the child is being treated, Fox 34 reported.

He told CNN on Sunday that "if we're not able to act decisively, then we will continue to have this bloodshed".

The shooter was sacked from a job in a trucking company mere hours before he opened fire at a state trooper when pulled over for failing to signal a turn at around 3:17 pm local time Saturday, the New York Times reported, citing police sources. Midland police confirmed on a Facebook page that the shooter was shot and killed in Odessa.

Ator was pulled over by Texas troopers in Midland on Saturday afternoon for failing to use his signal, police said. "I tried calling her name and she wouldn't answer", she said.

At one point, police thought there were two shooters in two separate vehicles.

Police have not released details on those killed or injured and the US Postal Service declined to comment on the condition of the mail carrier whose truck was stolen.

Alex Woods said he drove up to the movie theater about five minutes before the shootout and saw several police vehicles with flashing lights. Ultimately, the shooter was killed. Officers killed the gunman outside a movie theater.

The attacker, who has not yet been publicly identified by the police, also wounded 22 people in the second mass shooting to rock Texas in less than a month. At least 19 others were injured. "We will update with more information as soon as possible".

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a statement about the shooting.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump said he would work with Democrats and Republicans on gun legislation when Congress returns this month.

During a Sunday press conference Gerke said the investigation was ongoing and that authorities were still examining multiple crime scenes.
