Gatland confident of bold Cup showing, Sport News & Top Stories”

Gatland has included Cory Hill in his 31-man team for the Japan tournament, despite the lock having not played since February, and now still recovering from a fractured leg.

Wales's opening World Cup game is against Georgia in Toyota City on 23 September, followed by Australia in Tokyo six days later.

Gatland and Schmidt will decide on their final 31-man squads for the World Cup which starts on September 20 on Sunday, both will have had some questions answered from their respective performances on Saturday, there will be some further thought on a few questions which still remain unanswered. "Then you take every game as it comes".

"We'll have to assess the progress of someone like Cory Hill", Wales head coach Gatland said.

"They (medical staff) are confident that he will be up and training for that second game against Australia and he is a pretty good athlete, so we are not anxious from a conditioning point of view".

"Rob hasn't trained a lot in the lead up to the warm-up matches", Gatland said.

Gatland has opted for a split of 13 backs and 18 forwards, but Evans and Lee, who have 77 caps between them, miss out along with the likes of Jarrod Evans, Owen Lane, Scott Williams and Bradley Davies from Wales' training group. He came in with a shoulder injury, then he's picked a neck injury and a couple of back issues.

"Our original thinking was six props but we've gone with five", Gatland told reporters at his squad announcement.

After a heavy loss to England at Twickenham, Ireland showed their resilience by registering a rare away win over Wales in Cardiff on Saturday.

A surprise omission was prop Rob Evans, who was first choice during Wales' 2019 Grand Slam campaign. Forwards: Jake Ball (Scarlets), Adam Beard (Ospreys), Rhys Carre (Saracens), James Davies (Scarlets), Elliot Dee (Dragons), Ryan Elias (Scarlets), Tomas Francis (Exeter), Cory Hill (Dragons), Alun Wyn Jones (Ospreys), Wyn Jones (Scarlets), Dillon Lewis (Cardiff Blues), Ross Moriarty (Dragons), Josh Navidi (Cardiff Blues), Ken Owens (Scarlets), Aaron Shingler (Scarlets), Nicky Smith (Ospreys), Justin Tipuric (Ospreys), Aaron Wainwright (Dragons). Apart from one day, where his calves were a bit tight, he hasn't missed a training session or been in the physio room.

Gareth Davies, Aled Davies and Tomos Williams are named as the scrumhalfs with Dan Biggar and Patchell as the flyhalfves.

"He came in not being picked for the Scarlets, being on the bench and not having a lot of rugby, so we wanted to bring him along slowly, giving him the confidence and belief he can perform at this level".
