Google Doodle celebrates Spring Equinox 2019

Google Doodle celebrates Spring Equinox 2019”

Also known as the Vernal Equinox, today marks the time of year when day and night are most almost equal (roughly 12 hours each).

This is when the sun passed over the equator or the equator was the closest part of Earth to the sun, the exact moment being 21:59 GMT.

It's finally here! The Vernal (Spring) Equinox kicks off the season where days continue getting longer and temperatures continue getting warmer. This day in many cultures is marked as onset of spring or the first day of spring. During the summer solstice, Earth is tilted toward the sun. Interesting tidbit, the word "equinox" is derived from two Latin words - aequus, meaning "equal" and nox, meaning "night".

The spring equinox officially starts at 5:58 p.m. Wednesday.

It is said that when Julius Caesar established the Julian calendar in 45 BC, he set March 25 as the date of the spring equinox - a day that already marked the beginning of the New Year in the Persian and Indian calendars. This equinox extends to USA, Central America, Canada, Europe, Asia and northern Africa. They also point out that this year will also be a Supermoon! Depending on Earth's orbital position, either the Northern Hemisphere or the Southern is illuminated longer during a 24-hour cycle, C. Alex Young, associate director for science in the Heliophysics Science Division at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, told Live Science. This co-incidence last occurred in the year 2000.

The third, happening tonight, will be the final supermoon of 2019. There was a lunar eclipse in January and the largest supermoon of the year was in February.
