Hurricane Dorian Hits Bahamas. But What Is A Category 5 Storm?

Hurricane Dorian Hits Bahamas. But What Is A Category 5 Storm?”

The unnamed Category 5 hurricane crashed ashore along Florida's Gulf Coast on September 2.

Only four Category 5 hurricanes have hit the USA mainland, although the previous one was less than a year ago, Hurricane Michael in October 2018, said Phil Klotzbach, lead author of the Colorado State University's seasonal storm forecast. Millions of residents on the East Coast are watching to see if the storm will turn north in the next two days and spare the state with a direct hit. Currently, hurricane-force winds extend 45 miles (75 km) from the hurricane's center.

"Life-threatening storm surge and risky hurricane-force winds are expected along portions of the Florida east coast through mid-week, and storm surge and hurricane warning are in effect", the NHC said online. That storm did not make landfall. The government has opened 14 shelters across the Bahamas.

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Northwestern Bahamas, excluding Andros Island, and Jupiter Inlet to the Volusia/Brevard County Line.

Damage from hurricanes is usually caused more by flooding than by high winds.

Most models show steering currents collapsing as Dorian nears Florida due to a weakening of the high, before it gets scooped up by a dip in the jet stream approaching the East Coast and starts turning north.

Hurricane Dorian's sustained winds reached 185 miles per hour, tying the top speed at landfall ever recorded in the Atlantic, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Meanwhile South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster (R) has ordered a mandatory evacuation of the entire coast of the Palmetto State. Therefore, a tropical storm watch is in effect for Broward County.

Ahead of its landfall, the NWS said the storm could bring "a triple-threat of dangers" including a "life-threatening storm surge", heavy rains and "devastating hurricane-force winds".

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said the latest forecasts appeared good for the state, but he encouraged Floridians not to let their guard down. "Only a slight deviation to the left of the official forecast would bring the core of Dorian near or over the Florida east coast".

In Florida a state of emergency was declared last week due to the expected unsafe surf, damaging winds, and potential for life-threatening flash floods.

In a recent update, the NHC said Hurricane Dorian will move "dangerously close to the Florida east coast" tonight through Wednesday evening.

The National Hurricane Center on Sunday issued its first hurricane warning for parts of Florida related to Dorian.

"And I've seen some Category fours, you don't even see them that much, but a Category five is something that I don't know that I've ever even heard the term other than I know it's there", the president added.

Complicating matters is that with every new forecast, "we keep nudging (Dorian's track) a little bit to the left" which is closer to the Florida coast, Graham said. That makes forecasting its path delicate and hard.

Due to the fact that we don't know exactly what path Dorian will take, it is important that anyone along the USA southeast coast from Florida to the Carolinas continue to monitor forecasts closely.

President Donald Trump already declared a state of emergency and was briefed about what he called a "monstrous" storm. Hurricane Dorian changed course slightly on Saturday, possibly putting it on track to hit the Carolinas rather than Florida as forecast. Disney World and Orlando's other resorts held off announcing any closings. Later that month, Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico.
