Hurricane Dorian strengthens to 'catastrophic' Category 5 storm with 175 miles per hour winds”

Still, residents of Grand Bahama are advised to remain in their shelters, as risky winds will pick back up once the eye passes.

As of Monday morning, Hurricane Dorian had yet take the much-anticipated turn north away from the coast as forecasters predict, lingering about 110 miles off the coat of West Palm Beach. We do expect that this will maintain major hurricane as it continues its track off to the west.

"This is a life-threatening situation", the National Hurricane Center said Sunday, urging Abacos residents to stay sheltered and warning them, "Do not venture out into the eye if it passes over your location".

The newest advisory indicates that the east-central coast of Florida may experience a "brief tornado" Monday afternoon or evening.

The hurricane center says a small change to the left of the NHC forecast could bring the core of the extremely unsafe hurricane onshore of the Florida east coast within the hurricane warning area. "Dorian will slow to a crawl and may not emerge from the Bahamas until sometime Tuesday when it begins to move more to the north".

Hurricane Dorian is now a "catastrophic" Category 5 hurricane, the strongest category a hurricane can be, according to NOAA's 8am EDT (1pm BST) update. The storm has also grown larger in size, now extending outward up to 140 miles.

An updated statement said the storm was "heading with all its fury toward Grand Bahama".

Hurricane Dorian is now moving west across the Caribbean at about 8 miles per hour (13 km/h), a relatively slow speed that is expected to dump massive amounts of rain on the Abaco Islands.

As of 8 a.m., the eyewall of the powerful storm was about to hit the Abacos Islands.

Maximum sustained winds are being clocked at 150 miles per hour (240 kph) and the storm is slowly crawling westward at 8 miles per hour (13 kph).

Since it's almost stationary, it's "upwelling" the warm water at the surface and cooler water is replacing it, possibly pushing the storm feed below the "magic number" of 80 degrees that fuels hurricanes, he said.

Any remaining tourists in the Bahamas were sent to government shelters in schools, churches and other buildings offering protection from the storm.

"There will be gales developing along the immediate coast Monday night and Tuesday as well as tidal flooding and beach erosion", Cioffi said.

The potential path of Hurricane Dorian, a Category 5 storm, is seen in this graphic released by the National Hurricane Center on September 1, 2019.

According to the 2 p.m. Monday update from the National Hurricane Center, the eye of Category 4 Hurricane Dorian is creating life-threatening storm surge and catastrophic winds over Grand Bahama Island.

Dorian's current track is in between the paths of Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Floyd (illustrated left).

Destructive winds from Hurricane Dorian are spreading across the Bahamas' northernmost island. Dorian will remain powerful over the next few days.

The good news is that the storm is predicted to lose power as it makes its way north. Conditions are expected to grow only worse as Dorian stalls over the Bahamas, forecasters say. Earlier, Dorian churned over Abaco island with battering winds and surf during Sunday.
