Joker weightloss made Joaquin Phoenix go mad

Joker weightloss made Joaquin Phoenix go mad”

Joaquin Phoenix's upcoming comic book film, Joker, got an eight-minute standing ovation after its Venice International Film Festival premiere over the weekend. Indiewire does not hesitate to write that the Joker is "the boldest and most exciting superhero movie since The Dark Night", while the Hollywood Reporter considers Joaquin Phoenix's performance to be the best of his career.

Phoenix's version of the Joker follows the story of a beaten down clown, Arthur Fleck, who is also mentally troubled, which eventually leads to his descent into the maniacal icon that is the Joker. The art director at the Venice Film Festival, Alberto Barbera, stated that Joker is headed "straight to the Oscars".

Phoenix researched political assassins in his efforts to pin down the elusive Joker and said he had an idea of a "particular personality, a particular type".

Joker is something of a change for writer-director Todd Phillips, who previously made the Hangover and Old School comedies.

Phoenix also admitted that he wanted to avoid drawing upon past performances of the Joker on the silver screen, from the likes of Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and Jared Leto, as he ultimately aimed to make his creation "unidentifiable".

"He's so hard to define and you don't really want to define him", he said, claiming she decided not to attribute a specific mental health issue his character.

"My mother always tells me to smile and put on a happy face", he says.

While Joker is only due in cinemas on October 4, we've rounded up some early reactions that give us a glimpse of the visual masterpiece that awaits us.

Phoenix described the cackle he created for the character as "something that´s nearly painful".

"You really go mad when you lose that much weight in that amount of time", he said.

"I didn't think that I could do it, I kind of practised alone but I asked Todd to come over to audition my laugh".

Fleck does not want "the world to burn", he said. "His goal genuinely is to make people laugh and bring joy to the world".
