Los Angeles Chargers give Melvin Gordon permission to seek a trade

Los Angeles Chargers give Melvin Gordon permission to seek a trade”

Earlier on Sunday, Chargers GM Tom Telesco announced that extension talks with RB Melvin Gordon would be postponed until after the season.

Gordon has been away from the Chargers throughout the summer in hopes of earning a substantial raise.

"When or if Melvin reports, he'll play this season under his current contract, and we'll just revisit it after the season", Telesco said, confirming that he is not willing to renegotiate Gordon's pay until next season. Will Gordon return to the Chargers before the start of the season?

Gordon would make $5.6 million on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract. This also comes off the heels of Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network revealing that the team has given Gordon's representatives permission to seek a trade.

Gordon's situation has hung over the franchise for several weeks, going back to mid-July when his agent informed the team that Gordon would not report and instead would demand a trade if an extension failed to materialize.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Gordon is seeking at least $13 million a season while the Chargers have offered him a deal worth roughly $10 million a year. The talented running back took a page out of Le'Veon Bell's book and opted to hold out on his team until they renegotiated his contract.
