Meet The Mind Behind The Black Hole Photo”

And the woman whose crucial algorithm helped make it possible is just 29 years old.

In mathematics and computer science, an algorithm is a process or set of rules used to solve problems. Watch Video With Images of Black Hole Found in Galaxy Called M87.

Usually, radio telescopes will receive information from outer space at differing times due to lags caused by the Earth's atmosphere but Bouman developed a solution using an equation that uses the information from three telescopes at a time to cancel out delays caused by atmospheric noise. The image of the black hole presented on Wednesday was not from any one method, but all the images from different algorithms that were blurred together.

Bouman is a postdoctoral fellow working with the Event Horizon Telescope team that released the revolutionary photograph.

However, some online are arguing that Bouman got credit that she didn't deserve, claiming on Reddit that a white male Harvard graduate student named Andrew Chael "wrote 850,000 out of the 900,000 lines of code in the historic black-hole algorithm".

According to reports, she helped develop a computer program which helped in creating the image of the black hole.

Further, Bouman prepared a large database of synthetic astronomical images and the measurements they would yield at different telescopes, given random fluctuations in atmospheric noise, thermal noise from the telescopes themselves, and other types of noise.

"It required the awesome talent of a team of scientists from around the globe and years of hard work to develop the instrument, data processing, imaging methods, and analysis techniques that were necessary to pull off this seemingly impossible feat".

Meanwhile, other Twitter users began comparing Bouman to past female hidden figures including Rosalind Franklin, the pioneering molecular biologist who contributed to our modern understandings of DNA, and Margaret Hamilton, the largely unknown MIT female computer scientist who pioneered the "software" technology that landed astronauts on the moon.

Twitter user Tammy Emma Pepin wrote of Bouman, "Here's to more women in science - getting their credit and being remembered in history".

Bouman is an assistant professor in computing and mathematical sciences at the California Institute of Technology. Science needs more women.

"Congrats to Katie! What an incredible day, thanks to her brilliant work", the Smithsonian added.

MIT graduate Dr. Bouman posted her reaction to Facebook as the black hole image loaded on her laptop for the first time.

After the press event Wednesday, Bouman spoke with members of the media.

Bouman, who is now a post-doctoral fellow at MIT, is due to take up a post as an assistant professor at the California Institute of Technology, but intends to keep working with EHT. Hai Do was the editor.
