Top seed Djokovic (shoulder) out at US Open

Top seed Djokovic (shoulder) out at US Open”

Defending champion Novak Djokovic's title defence came to a halt on Sunday, as the Serbian was forced to retire from his fourth-round clash against Stan Wawrinka due to a shoulder injury.

Djokovic, 32, retired with a shoulder problem seconds after a double fault left him two sets and a break down. Serving for the set at 5-4, Wawrinka blasted a service victor to seal the opener, finding himself 3-0 down in set number two after the only break for Novak that gave his fans something to cheer about.

Wawrinka was leading 6-4, 7-5, 2-1 when world No 1 Djokovic, who won four of the last five grand slam titles, decided he could not continue and walked off the Arthur Ashe Stadium court to a chorus of boos.

"It's never the way you want to finish the match", said the No. 23-seeded Wawrinka, who will face No. 5 Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals.

"He's a good friend, an fantastic champion". The victor will face either Roger Federer or Grigor Dimitrov in the semis, while Rafael Nadal looms as a potential finalist from the other side of the draw. Early in the third set, Djokovic retired from the match and the assembled crowd booed his decision.

Djokovic won his next match, looking good, and declared himself mostly pain-free, although he refused to disclose any details of the injury or what type of treatment he had received. Djokovic won that one in an unprecedented fifth-set tiebreaker after almost five hours. "I've said that in the past". Soon he was trying to take shortcuts to avoid lengthy points, and nothing was working.
