Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey's account hacked, racist tweets Submitted”

Earlier in the year, Simone Brunozzi, of, a digital real estate blockchain transactions outfit - shared how his phone number, and then his Twitter account had been hacked - and how they work to regain his online identity via the phone number had been much easier than dealing with the damage done to his identity on Twitter.

Unsurprisingly, Dorsey is a popular and prolific tweeter himself, with more than 4,000,000 followers and 26,000 tweets, so Twitter's quick response was commendable - reports suggest that the offensive tweets were removed within 15 minutes of being sighted.

"This allowed an unauthorised person to compose and send tweets via text message from the phone number".

If hackers can successfully compromise the social networking accounts belonging to the CEO of multibillion-dollar firms, then it means that no one is beyond their reach.

Just a while later, "Twitter Comms", the official Twitter communication handle has informed everyone about the hack. His Twitter account was recently hacked, an action that should serve to highlight the importance of being security conscious, especially if you are a crypto holder. "That issue is now resolved", the company said, adding separately that there was no indication that Twitter's systems had been compromised.

Three hours after that, @TwitterComms felt ready to point the the finger at Dorsey's mobile phone carrier as the source of the problem.

Security researcher Brian Krebs said it appeared that Dorsey was the victim of a SIM swapping attack in which a mobile provider is tricked or otherwise convinced to transfer a victim's phone number to a SIM card controlled by someone else. Twitter acquired Cloudhopper in 2010.

It goes beyond the failure of providing a phone number that can be accessed in a SIM swap - "even hardware key and authenticator app set up, but when I remove my phone number it disables ALL of my 2FAs and lets anyone login", the Levels said. Ironically, the top reason Twitter says you should do this is "Keeping your account secure". As Twitter's SMS FAQ page explains, "When you send a text message from your phone to your Twitter code, it will always post as a Tweet to your profile". The simple failure to secure control of the CEO's account is a significant failure for the company, with implications far beyond a few minutes of chaos.

Given the obvious hacking risk, you might think Twitter would offer SMS-to-tweet as an option that users could select, making sure they understand the tradeoffs. But there's a catch: Doing so will disable two-factor authentication on your account. It raises tons of security questions for the millions of users on the platform. The accounts the retweets came from have also been suspended.
