US Open Match Ends in Tears and a Hug

US Open Match Ends in Tears and a Hug”

Osaka, who won the tournament a year ago by beating Serena Williams in a controversial finals match, steamrolled Gauff 6-3, 6-0 in one hour and five minutes to advance to the fourth round.

Top seed Osaka swept past Gauff in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, in a dominant performance at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Swiss 13th seed Belinda Bencic, Osaka's next opponent, did not have to take to the court on Saturday after her Estonian opponent Anett Kontaveit withdrew before the match due to illness.

The families first met at the Pro World academy in Florida: "We've known them since Coco was about ten". It seemed like virtually every one of the 23,771 seats was filled, and to say the fans were into the action on the court would be an understatement.

Osaka's own moment of ultimate victory past year was spoiled by boos in the same stadium after a controversial game penalty against Serena Williams helped her take the title, prompting her to later call the moment "bittersweet", something Gauff understands. "For me the fact that both of us made it and we're both still working as hard as we can I think it's incredible and I think you guys are awesome and I think Coco you're fantastic", Osaka said.

Osaka has the edge in experience and accomplishments, but hasn't played at her highest level this week.

"After the match, I think she just proved that she's a true athlete", Gauff said.

"I didn't know what to expect from her ball".

Gauff has had some tough (and impressive) matches this week.

'She showed that she can play with her, ' concluded her father. She came to the net 106 times against Halep and 75 against Cirstea, confident in her serve-and-volley game.

She failed to convert four match points in all that day, ceded six games in a row and lost 7-5 in the third.

Gauff usually only projects strength on court, as in her run to the fourth round at Wimbledon in July in her Grand Slam debut. "She's so young. That's definitely going to happen", Osaka said. Williams, herself distraught, was the one trying to cheer up Osaka.

Team McCoco, as they are calling themselves, beat the No. 9-seeded team of Nicole Melichar and Kveta Peschke 6-3, 7-6 (9) before a crowd that was packed to the top of Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Naomi Osaka embraced Cori Gauff.

Gauff acknowledged feeling some jitters at the outset, and Osaka produced the match's initial seven winners.

Still up a break at 5-3, however, Osaka held serve to take a one-set advantage. In typical Osaka fashion, she didn't want to make a big deal out of her actions during her news conference later in the evening, but Gauff didn't hold back in what it meant to her.

After 48 hours of incessant hype for the third-round clash between the defending champion and the teenage phenom, the match itself frankly wasn't all that memorable.

The show of sportsman was incredibly inspiring, and the post-match interview quickly went viral on Twitter.

"I said no because I knew I was going to cry the whole time", tearful Gauff said after Osaka talked her into it.
