Bugatti just won the race to 300 miles per hour with a Chiron”

Using Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessien test facility, which features a whopping 8.7km dead-straight strip, racing vehicle driver Andy Wallace took the Chiron to a speed of 304.773mph (490.484km/h). Bugatti had secretly been working on it for over six months with Michelin and Dallara to create this new version of Chiron. This is no ordinary Chiron.

For a start, it's 25cm longer than the "regular" Chiron hypercar, with a reshaped rear end.

A laser-controlled ride height system was also added to ensure the adjustable suspension is geared towards keeping the amount of drag as low as possible. It is 25 centimetres longer than the standard Chiron Sport and looks imposing thanks to the ultra-aero body with a long tail. Subjectively, they add even more drama and a whole new menace and sense of objective to the Chiron aesthetic. Somehow the design team has managed to incorporate the demands for low drag and high-speed stability, while improving aesthetics to the extent that when you look at the regular auto, it looks stumpy in comparison.

Italian carmaker's Head of Exterior Design, Frank Heyl said that they faced biggest challenge to get overall package right. Bugatti installed a safety seat for the driver and a full roll cage, while some weight-saving measures were implemented as well.

Given speed is driven by two factors-aerodynamic efficiency and power-the engine powering the Chiron is rather special too.

The engine, nicknamed "Thor", has been reportedly massaged to churn out a whopping 1,578 horsepower. Competitors to the Chiron, including Sweden's Koenigsegg and America's Hennessey, build cars capable of challenging the Bugatti but struggle to secure space to prove their potential. With this new record of the Chiron we enter again uncharted territory.

Bugatti's President, Stephen Winkelmann in an interview to Top Gear said that it will be last record chased by the company. We're overjoyed to be the primary producer ever to have achieved a velocity of greater than 300 miles per hour.

There's been a good reason for Bugatti's hesitation to let the Chiron run unrestricted, namely the lack of a production tyre able to carry those speeds. "In future we will focus on other areas", says Winkelmann.

Bugatti has now officially broken the unfathomable 300mph barrier with help from Chiron prototype on Ehra-Lessien. Minor edits have been made. Well, we'll have to wait and see. And it's really bloody fast.
