Ferrari finally end drought as Leclerc gets first F1 win

Ferrari finally end drought as Leclerc gets first F1 win”

"On one hand a dream since being a child that has been realised; on the other hand it's been a very hard weekend since yesterday".

"We lost a friend first of all - I would like to dedicate my first win to him". We have grown up together.

"It was of course not a great end to the weekend, but it's not the worst thing that can happen in life as we have seen yesterday", said Verstappen who was also a friend of Hubert's. "Then we covered for Lewis and at that point we pitted way earlier than everyone else and that determined the race result".

Hamilton was within one second of Leclerc on the final lap, but the 21-year-old from Monaco held his nerve to cross the line just.981 seconds ahead of the five-time F1 champion.

Despite failing to win, Hamilton extends his lead in the drivers' championship to 268 points.

Leclerc, who is 22 next month, the same age as Hubert, was visibly moved by the tragedy.

A moment of silence was observed before the race in the French driver's memory.

Nathalie held her son's pink and white crash helmet.

Coming as it did in the wake of Hubert's death, the F1 meeting at Spa had a mournful tone as drivers, teams and fans paid their respects, including by wearing black armbands.

Leclerc hugged Hubert's mother.

Daniel Ricciardo, the usually jovial Australian, kept his eyes closed throughout the reflective pause, before appearing to wipe away tears - his actions summing up the sombre mood here before yesterday's race. All 20 of the drivers' cars were adorned with "Racing for Anthoine" stickers.

The fresher rubber enabled all three to close down Vettel easily, but while Ferrari ordered the German to let Leclerc past and rebuild his buffer, he was subsequently deployed to slow the Mercedes drivers to protect his teammate's lead at the expense of his own result.

The dramatic start crash between Max Verstappen and Kimi Raikkonen and other race events such as McLaren's failures right at the beginning and right at the end, and Alex Albon's fraught dice with Sergio Perez are evaluated too. The force of the impact sent Raikkonen temporarily on to two wheels. Verstappen sustained damage to his vehicle and slammed into the barriers at the top of Eau Rouge, the corner which claimed Hubert's life.

The incident brought out the safety vehicle.

Hamilton clearly rates Leclerc extremely highly. The German stopped on lap 16, but it was not until lap 21 that Leclerc dived in for a change of rubber.

In the news conference that followed Sunday's race at Spa, Lewis Hamilton hailed the Monegasque racer, but in doing so also shone a light on Vettel's struggles.

"And then to, continuous, from race one out-perform, out-qualify and out-drive a four-time world champion is not easy to do".

Lando Norris had been lying fifth for nearly the entire race, but his McLaren agonizingly ground to a halt on the final lap with engine trouble. Hulkenberg and teammate Daniel Ricciardo started 12th and 10th respectively, but both lost places in the chaos of the first turn and were forced to fight back to take the chequered flag in the top 10.
