Indonesia Limits Access for Foreigners to Papua and West Papua”

Indonesian forces opening fire on protesters in Deiyai, West Papua.

President Joko Widodo has ordered the police to look into the acts of racism against the Papuan students as well as take firm action against the groups responsible for the subsequent violent protests in the localities. Six people were reportedly killed during the attack but police have so far denied the claim. Six are believed to have died in the Deiyai area of West Papua last week and a Papuan student was shot dead during a raid on a student dormitory yesterday. The authorities dispute these numbers.

The protests were triggered by a series of racist incidents against Papuan students in Semarang, Malang and Surabaya on the island of Java on Independence Day, Aug. 17. Those shouting included military officers.

Nonetheless, in West Papua and Papua, often referred to collectively as West Papua, thousands of people had already taken to the streets to protest against the racist remarks made toward the students.

It came as police in Papua, Indonesia's easternmost territory which shares a border with independent Papua New Guinea, banned demonstrations that could lead to "anarchist acts".

He explained that Indonesian authorities have adopted the discriminatory behavior and mentality from their former Dutch rulers and are now abusing their newly-gained power to oppress Papuan minorities. "East Timor was never recognised by the United Nations as being part of East Timor and that's a fundamental difference that makes the resolution of the West Papua problem so much more hard".

West Papua became part of Indonesia through a rigged referendum.

In Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, a legal aid lawyer says police have charged two students with treasonous intent against the unity of the nation.

POLICE in Indonesia's Papua region today banned demonstrations that could lead to "anarchist acts" following almost two weeks of mass protests in the easternmost territory of the Southeast Asian archipelago. When Indonesia gained independence in 1949, West Papua, which was geographically, culturally and ethnically different, did not join the newly formed Indonesian state and instead, declared itself independent in 1961.

The Guardian reports that there has been an internet blackout across the region with soldiers firing at a crowd of protesters. Indonesia took full control of the elections and its military handpicked a mere1,025 people out of over one millionto vote. The vote reaffirmed Jakarta's control over West Papua.

Demonstrations have broken out across Papua and West Papua, often descending into violence after being opposed by security forces and vigilante groups.

The exiled leader of the United Movement for the Liberation of West Papua Benny Wenda said the independence movement was peaceful and that a free and fair referendum was the only solution to the long-running contestation of the region.

The Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) in its totality has had a mixed stance on this issue. It's quite clear that the Indonesian government is concealing its human rights abuses.
