‘Mindless criminals’ - Onyeama reacts to fresh attack on Nigerians in South Africa

‘Mindless criminals’ - Onyeama reacts to fresh attack on Nigerians in South Africa”

The nationality of the deceased could not be immediately established yesterday.

"At this stage police are still interviewing several people to establish the motive", said a statement by the provincial commissioner. No one has been arrested for the murder. At least 110 people were arrested.

He described the attackers as mindless criminals, noting that the police intervention was ineffective.

"The mob also looted several shops that were around the vicinity suspected to be owned by foreign nationals".

The looting started in Jeppestown where shops were looted and set alight and property was also damaged.

The latest unrest reportedly began on Sunday when a building in Johannesburg's Central Business District caught fire and collapsed, killing at least three people. A total of 100 people have been arrested since Sunday.

Such violence breaks out sporadically in South Africa, where many nationals blame immigrants for high unemployment, particularly in manual labour.

Fani-Kayode, a former minister of aviation is advocating a "teeth for tat" approach, to deal with South Africans.

He was, however, silent on the measures that would be taken over the increasing violence against Nigerians and other foreigners in the country.

"We condemn this violence which is taking place, irrespective of whatever reasons people want to give", he said.

"People of South Africa are hungry, they are sitting at home... while companies in South Africa are employing foreigners ...(because) its cheap labour".

Cele said the government's first priority was to deploy more police officers to the affected areas.

Police Minister Bheki Cele insisted the violence was linked to "criminality" rather than "xenophobia". "This is not what we should be doing to ourselves as Africans". "It's a state of national emergency", he said. Motorists were also stoned by rioters in some parts of Johannesburg shattering their windscreens.

"At an African Union level, I think there is a need for very serious introspection regarding what measures are necessary to protect the defenceless African citizenry in this country".
