"No way will I ask Brussels to delay Brexit", says British PM

"But if they do they will plainly chop the legs out from under the United Kingdom position and make any further negotiation absolutely impossible".

It followed an emergency cabinet meeting on Monday afternoon before the prime minister addressed Conservative MPs at a No 10 drinks reception.

More than three years have passed since Britons voted by 52 percent to leave the European Union, a period marked by huge political upheaval, economic uncertainty and deep divisions both in parliament and across the country.

But leading figures, including ex-cabinet minister David Gauke, have insisted that despite the threat of expulsion, they will press ahead with efforts to pass legislation requiring the PM to seek another Brexit extension if he can not get a deal.

Johnson, the face of the 2016 Vote Leave campaign, has cast rebels as European Union "collaborators" who are undermining the government's negotiating hand in seeking a withdrawal agreement by blunting his threat of a no-deal Brexit.

A parliamentary defeat for the government could trigger an election, which media reports have said Johnson is readying for.

But Johnson believes another delay to Brexit, which was due to happen at the end of March, would be undemocratic and says those frustrating the process simply want to block Brexit altogether and go against the country's 2016 referendum result.

There is widespread speculation in London that if opposition MPs, reinforced by rebels from his own party, get the "no deal" law off the starting blocks, he may announce, as early as Wednesday, an election either side of the October 31 departure deadline.

"If the Government tries to force an election now, Labour should vote against it", he said.

The Sun tabloid reported that Johnson could call a poll in five weeks' time - before Brexit.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has summoned his senior ministers to his Downing Street office on eve of a key effort in Parliament to delay a no-deal Brexit.

The text of the opposition bill was tweeted out by Labour MP Hilary Benn shortly before Johnson spoke.

Time is short for lawmakers to block a no-deal Brexit.

According to the BBC, he is planning to introduce a law to force Johnson to seek to delay Brexit until January 1, 2020, unless parliament had approved a divorce deal or accepted a "no deal" Brexit before October 19.

The Government source said Tory MPs who voted against the Government could face losing the party whip.

Lawmakers are expected to vote on Tuesday on a plan that would give members of parliament who are opposed to Johnson's Brexit strategy control of the parliamentary agenda.

The prime minister said he wanted negotiators to get on with their work "without that sword of Damocles over their necks. And without an election, which I don't want and you don't want".

The alternative is that Mr Johnson himself calls a vote, although he would need the support of two-thirds of MPs.

House of Commons Leader Jacob Rees-Mogg has said rebel legislation would be considered a matter of confidence in the government.

However, former Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair warned Corbyn, a veteran socialist, to avoid what he cast as an election "elephant trap" Johnson had laid for Labour.

After winning the top job in the chaos following the referendum, May bet on a 2017 snap election but lost her majority.
