Ashes 2019: England and Australia ring the changes for pivotal fourth test

Ashes 2019: England and Australia ring the changes for pivotal fourth test”

The Ashes series is now locked at 1-1 following England's dramatic one-wicket win in the third Test at Headingley where all-rounder Ben Stokes's 135 not out saw them to a stunning win.

Craig Overton will replace Chris Woakes in the only change to England's side for the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford.

Head coach Justin Langer said the players were still reeling from the dramatic ending to the third test, where a victory would have seen Australia retain the Ashes.

Khawaja makes way for Smith, who missed the third test after being felled by a short ball from Jofra Archer during the second match at Lord's.

"Now we've got to work out what we're going to do, and use that as fire".

"We felt like we got the Ashes stolen the other day", he said of England's successful chase of their record 359 target.

Steve Smith's return, after recovering from the effects of a concussion, and the dropping of Usman Khawaja will bring about a change in Australia's batting lineup, too. "To England's great credit, that's what they did - they won that Test match".

England were nine wickets down with 73 runs required before Stokes' swashbuckling innings nearly single-handedly kept England in the series and denied Australia a win that would have ensured the tourists retained the Ashes. The left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc is also back in the mix, which means that the entertainment is guaranteed for the fans. "He got himself into a battle and I expect him to do that this week", he said.

"If anyone's going to get over any little demons it'll be Steven".

Langer said losing at Headingley by one wicket after bowling out England for 67 in the first innings was a "really tough loss" for the team, but their preparations for the upcoming game had been solid.

Captain Joe Root has also confirmed that Joe Denly will move to the top of the batting order to open with Rory Burns, with Jason Roy set to bat at No 4.

England could field the same XI that played at Headingley after James Anderson, their all-time leading wicket-taker, was ruled out of the last two Tests with the calf injury that means his four overs in the first innings at Edgbaston will be the only ones he bowls this series.

'You look at someone like Jason coming in lower down and the ability to play in his manner, a little bit more freely when it's not doing as much might give him a better chance, ' said Root.
