Ben Wheatley Will Direct TOMB RAIDER Sequel

Ben Wheatley Will Direct TOMB RAIDER Sequel”

There may still be time for the film to fall through, but for now, fans may want to explore Wheatley's gory filmography (like High-Rise, which left Tom Hiddleston covered in blood) in case Tomb Raider heads that way when it returns to theaters March 19, 2021.

According to Deadline, the untitled sequel (written by Free Fire's Amy Jump) has landed director Ben Wheatley (taking over for the original's Roar Uthaug) and will be aiming for a release date of march 19, 2021. He worked together with Jump on Kill List, Sightseers, A Field in England, High-Rise, and Free Fire. Amy Jump is expected to write the script for the movie, which will be a continuation of Lara's character from the first film. In the movie, Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. A Hollywood break was just waiting in the wings for Wheatley, who has been earning acclaim in his home country of the United Kingdom since 2009, and Tomb Raider might just be it. Arriving March 19, 2021, Academy Award victor Alicia Vikander will reprise her role as Lara Croft.

Vikander's first Tomb Raider was directed by Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug and had the lowest domestic box office take of any of the Tomb Raider movies. With 2018's film being based on 2013's Tomb Raider game reboot, it's possible that the sequel will be based on Rise of the Tomb Raider or Shadow of the Tomb Raider. "I found it very empowering". It appears that Wheatley is slowly moving towards more "mainstream" projects as he's now in post-production on a new adaptation of Rebecca. A sequel to 2018's Tomb Raider starring Alicia Vikander is in the works.
