Brexit: MPs debating bill to block no”

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson suffered a fresh blow Wednesday, after a rebel bill to block a no-deal Brexit next month passed its first stage in Parliament.

Johnson will address Parliament Wednesday in his first "Prime Minister's Questions", an always-rowdy tradition, since taking office five weeks ago.

Peers are now debating a business motion on how to move forward with the bill on Thursday - but pro-Brexit peers have laid down over 100 amendments to derail its progress.

The geographical distribution of the vote, and the extent to which votes divide between rival parties, determine the balance within parliament. Party stalwarts Ken Clarke and Sir Nicholas Soames, Winston Churchill's grandson, were also dismissed.

"Nobody back in 2016 in the referendum voted for a no deal brexit, a crash out Brexit, nobody voted to make themselves poorer and nobody voted to lose hundreds of thousands of jobs".

Johnson accused his opponents of undermining the government's attempt to strike a new divorce deal with the European Union, and said he would seek a general election if the lawmakers succeed this week, taking his message directly to the people in his bid to deliver Brexit come what may. To say you want a deal is quite different from saying you want a deal that isn't achievable.

"I am determined to lead this country forward and take Britain out of the European Union on October 31".

Facing a growing rebellion in his Conservative Party, and opposition leaders emboldened by their newfound leverage, Johnson is in danger of seeing his bold moves to realize an October 31 Brexit fall into the same quagmire that sunk his predecessor, Theresa May.

He expelled them all from the party, depriving his six-week-old government of a parliamentary majority. Under current constitutional procedures, he needs the support of two-thirds of the MPs in order to hold early elections.

The beleaguered United Kingdom leader got a boost Wednesday when a Scottish court refused to intervene in his decision to suspend Parliament, ruling it was a matter for lawmakers to decide, not the courts.

The leader of the SNP in Westminster, Ian Blackford, said the debate about an early election was only going ahead because the PM had lost the vote against the bill.

The second most powerful man in the Labour Party, John McDonnell, said the no-deal blocking legislation had to get assent from Queen Elizabeth, putting the law onto the statute book, before the party would agree to an election.

Their bill would force the government to delay Brexit until January 31 unless it has agreed an exit deal or secured MPs' approval for "no deal" by October 19.

"I think it is a shame - a lot of them are very talented people". Soames called his expulsion "the fortunes of war". I knew what I was doing.

After dramatically losing his majority, being hamstrung by parliament and sacking several of his party's prominent MPs things are looking "very bleak" for UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Alex Salmond tells RT.

This move, by opposition MPs as well as some Conservative rebels, prompted Johnson to put forward a motion to call a general election.

Johnson caused widespread anger among parliamentarians last week with his decision to drastically reduce the number of days MPs will be able to meet before the Brexit deadline in what was seen as a move to try to curb his opponents.
