Devin Toner told to seek answers for Ireland World Cup omission

Devin Toner told to seek answers for Ireland World Cup omission”

The Vice-President of World Rugby, Agustin Pichot, admitted yesterday that if he was Devin Toner he would be seeking "answers" from the governing body after the 6ft 10in lock was left out of Ireland's 31-man World Cup squad in favour of a South African who qualified to play for the country only last month.

The IRFU submitted their squad to World Cup on Monday morning and had initially planned to publicly release the 31 names next Sunday, before a sudden change of plans. I will be asking WR (World Rugby) for answers.

The 33-year-old has played 63 Tests for Ireland, but will not be on the plane to Japan despite his noted lineout and restart expertise.

"I feel sorry for him; nothing against who was properly selected for the RWC19 by the way".

"I would question how much CJ Stander has committed to his local environment, what Bundee (Aki) has done for his local environment, that they are domiciled here in Ireland and have been for a number of years".

Jean Kleyn, who qualified on residency last month and has won two caps, was given the nod instead.

"There were some guys who obviously had more experience and probably had more credit in the bank and were more established and there were other guys who were trying to force their way into group and trying to get a balance of current form versus previous performance, it's always a very very hard conundrum to try to solve".

Luke McGrath has overcome competition from Kieran Marmion to take the second scrum-half spot, behind first-choice Conor Murray.

Fly-half Joey Carbery will cover scrum-half as an emergency option, with Schmidt taking three 10s.

Schmidt, who caught people on the hop having said he would make the squad public only after the match with Wales, said it had been a tough call in several positions but he says he wants to strike the right balance which he admits he did not in 2015. Russian Federation and Samoa make up the group.

The remaining 19 members of the squad will be playing in their first-ever World Cup.

Forwards: R Best (Ulster, capt), T Beirne (Munster), J Conan, S Cronin, T Furlong, C Healy (all Leinster), D Kilcoyne (Munster), I Henderson (Ulster), J Kleyn, P O'Mahony (both Munster), A Porter, R Ruddock, James Ryan (all Leinster), John Ryan, N Scannell, CJ Stander (all Munster), J Van Der Flier (Leinster).
