Hong Kong police target commuters with batons”

A Hong Kong mother who was accompanying her son to the airport, who declined to be named, expressed anger over the disruption, but she took it out on the subway authorities rather than blaming the protesters.

Tung Chung MTR Station and part of the Tung Chung subway line were shut down after the station became crowded with thousands of protesters, journalists and police later in the afternoon, with some protesters smashing windows in the station control room, and police ordering journalists to leave, live video streams showed.

MTR Corp. said Sunday trains from the airport on Chek Lap Kok island into the city still are running.

Trolleys were overturned and barricades erected at the airport and the nearby town of Tung Chung.

Video footage captured by native media confirmed elite police cost and beat a crowd cowering inside a prepare carriage, with Amnesty Worldwide calling their actions "horrifying". They are keeping a close eye on the situation and are disturbed by media reports that show police hurting protesters.

One was a small boy who was left with head injuries.

Tam said the police conduct when they arrived at the station was "very disturbing - the police appear to have beaten up people indiscriminately". Police made several arrests outside the building.

Teargas and coloured blue water has been fired dramatically from a water cannon truck at raging protesters who threw gasoline bombs at government headquarters in Hong Kong.

A protester walks in front of a burning barricade during a clash with police after an anti-government rally in Wan Chai district.

"At around 4pm, a large group hurled numerous iron poles, bricks and rocks into the track near the airport station", they wrote on Twitter.

Hong Kong police said on Sunday that 63 people had been arrested during the riots on Saturday.

"If the government doesn't respond to the five major demands of the Hong Kong people eventually, it will be hard for Hong Kong to return to the way it was, to the old social order", Lam told the rally.

"No one should harm [China's] national sovereignty and security; no one should challenge the power of the central authorities and the authority of the Basic Law of the HKSAR; no one should use Hong Kong to infiltrate and undermine the mainland", it said, referring to the city's formal title of Special Administrative Region.

"The airport is Hong Kong's most important economic lifeline", said Cary, a 19-year-old student, standing in front of makeshift barricades created to block the major road leading to the airport.

The protests followed a night of violent clashes between protesters and police.

They were arrested on suspicion of possessing explosives, weapons or engaging in criminal damage, acting Senior Superintendent Tsui Suk-yee of Kowloon West Regional (Crime) division said at a news briefing on Sunday. More than 500 flights were canceled due to the incident.

The rally was held amid continuing police violence in Hong Kong and on the fifth anniversary of the day China set limits for Hong Kong's 2017 chief executive election that led to massive protests there known as the "Umbrella Revolution".

The protests have expanded into a wider pro-democracy call and a rejection of attempts by Beijing to curtail the freedoms of the semi-autonomous territory.

Hong Kong is a part of China and the Hong Kong affairs are the pure internal affairs of China, the spokesperson said, urging those US politicians to immediately stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs, otherwise they would end up lifting a rock only to drop it on their own feet.

The unrest began over a now-suspended extradition bill that would have allowed people in the city to be sent to China for trial in courts controlled by the party.
