In a 4 minute video posted to twitter - Kronwall thanks the fans of Detroit and talks family and the future.

The Detroit Red Wings will be saying goodbye to one of their leaders.

"I'll never forget the feeling of walking into the Joe (Louis Arena) on game days", the 38-year-old said in a video released by the team.

Defenceman Niklas Kronwall retired Tuesday after 15 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings.

The bruising Swedish rearguard was selected by the Red Wings 29th overall in the 2000 NHL Draft and spent his entire career in Motown, culminating in a championship in 2007-08. "His impact on our organization has been immeasurable, from his stellar on-ice play which helped us capture a Stanley Cup, to the legacy he built off the ice as someone who was always proud to give back to the Detroit community".

"It was an incredible honor, knowing all the history and all the great players that have worn that very same jersey before me", he said.

Kronwall played 953 games in his National Hockey League career and was part of the Detroit team that won the Stanley Cup in 2008. "This franchise, this city, the people of MI, has shaped me who I am today".
