Opponents of no-deal Brexit defeat British PM Boris Johnson in parliament

Opponents of no-deal Brexit defeat British PM Boris Johnson in parliament”

Johnson thinks, not unreasonably, that he could win a general election without the assistance of the Conservative Party's anti-Brexit elements.

Opponents of a no deal Brexit strategy have taken control of Britain's House of Commons 328 votes to 301, with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson conceding he will now seek out a general election.

Without an election. I don't want an election.

The pound sterling hit multi-year lows against the dollar on Tuesday amid fears of a no-deal Brexit but rebounded after Johnson lost his working parliamentary majority.

He said the move by opposition MPs and members of his Conservative Party to try to delay Brexit beyond October 31 if he can not agree exit terms with Brussels was like "running up the white flag".

Johnson's government will now seek to hold a vote on Wednesday to approve an early election, most likely to be held on Oct 14.

In a theatrical show of defiance, Conservative MP Phillip Lee crossed the floor of the Commons while Johnson was making his statement, to defect to the pro-European Liberal Democrats. "We are negotiating a deal and I am confident of getting a deal".

Mr Johnson has pledged to deliver Brexit by October 31 "do or die" and with or without a deal but his preference remains to take Britain out of the bloc with an agreement.

"Currencies, as a rule, do not like uncertainty. The idea is that there could of course be a no-deal Brexit, which investors do not like. They do not like the idea of the uncertainty or the potential chaos that that could bring", said Jane Foley, of Rabobank on BBC's Radio 4 Today programme.

Parliament is returning from its summer recess Tuesday with a key piece of legislation on its agenda that would prevent an immediate no-deal exit.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said Mr Johnson was not really intending to do a deal with Brussels and instead planned to crash Britain out of the EU.

Former Cabinet minister Justine Greening pre-empted promised punishment from Number 10 for Tory rebels who side with the opposition as she said she will not stand as a Conservative candidate again.

More than three years have passed since Britons voted by 52% to leave the European Union, a period marked by huge political upheaval, economic uncertainty and deep divisions in parliament and across the country.

Meanwhile, mounting concern among global investors about Brexit has pushed the pound to its lowest level since a "flash crash" it endured in October 2016, when uncertainty after the Brexit vote was particularly high.

Though the European Union is Britain's biggest trading partner, a no-deal Brexit would also be disruptive to Europe - a fact not lost on Brussels.

Andreeva says the EU's executive body, which supervises Brexit negotiations on behalf of Britain's 27 European partners, is operating on the "working assumption" that Britain will leave the bloc on October 31. We are leaving on the 31st of October, no ifs or buts. "But the lingering doubt they've got is: Will the shenanigans in Parliament somehow lead to the cancellation or the delay of Brexit?"

A spokesperson for the European Commission told reporters in Brussels on Tuesday that despite encouraging words from the United Kingdom government, "I can not report any concrete proposals having been made that we have seen".

"That's encouraging them, and weakening our position to actually get the deal we all want".
