Teen blind after eating fries, bread and ham for 7 years

Teen blind after eating fries, bread and ham for 7 years”

Though nutritional optic neuropathy is rare in developed countries, the University of Iowa documented a case in which a 28-year-old man's diet consisted nearly entirely of 1.9 litres of vodka per day, causing vision problems.

"I would make him nice sandwiches - and put an apple or other fruit in - and he wouldn't eat any of it".

Blood tests showed he was anaemic, due to low B12 that causes fatigue.

"It is important to eat a varied diet!"

However, his diet has since damaged his optic nerve, leading to a condition known as nutritional optic neuropathy. "That means he can't drive and would find it really hard to read, watch TV or discern faces", Atan told the BBC.

His poor diet - which deprived him of essential vitamins and minerals found in vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and dairy - began several years ago, and when the boy was 14 he complained to doctors of "tiredness". According to the authors, nutritional optic neuropathy should be considered in any patient with unexplained vision symptoms and poor diet, regardless of BMI. Taylor and his collaborators are trying to understand how refined carbohydrates may inflict damage on the cells within our eyes and bodies.

"[His initial doctors] said it was all in his head".

"Our vision has such an impact on quality of life, education, employment, social interactions, and mental health", said Dr. Denize Atan with the Bristol School of Medicine. "So, problems take a long time to develop", Atan said.

"This patient likely suffers from ARFID, or Avoidant-restrictive food intake disorder, which is becoming a more recognized disorder, in which patients restrict their intake typically based on textural, color, or taste aversions to foods", Parekh explained.

Still, this teen continued on a course of supplements to help prevent further blindness, and was referred to therapy for eating disorders.

The Daily Mail reported that the boy, who ended up dropping out of college, lacked a number of vitamins including vitamin B12, copper, and vitamin D, which are crucial for maintaining good health.

The Independent was able to get a hold of his mother, who asked to remain anonymous, and she informed the publication she first noticed her son's diet change when he was just seven years old.

In some places, malnutrition caused by poverty, war and drought is linked to higher rates of nutritional optic neuropathy, according to a statement.

"Without nutrient supplements or fortified foods, strict veganism can lead to irreversible blindness". His teachers became concerned too. "But he restricted his food to crisps and chips [fries] and a bit of processed pork".

Suitable sources of B12 would be nutritional yeast, marmite and fortified foods, like fortified cereals and nut milks.
