United Kingdom launches 'get ready for Brexit' campaign

United Kingdom launches 'get ready for Brexit' campaign”

"In the event of a no-deal Brexit, and in the absence of replacement agreements (rollover deals), the United Kingdom would abruptly lose preferential access to these markets and, by default, would have to export under World Trade Organization Most Favoured Nation (MFN) tariffs", the report said.

Government research shows that only 50% of the population think it's likely the United Kingdom will leave the European Union on 31st October, 42% of SMEs are unsure of how they can get ready, and just 31% of the British public have looked for information on how to prepare for Brexit.

"Are you absolutely sure that there will be no shortages of fresh food in this country as a result of no-deal?" With Britain (and the U.S., for that matter) having outsourced for many years, the skills' shortage is real.

"There will be no shortages of fresh food", he added.

Gove's comments confounded members of the fresh produce industry however, who will face greater hardships in importing fresh produce goods across the Calais-Dover border as customs declarations will return in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

Gove, the minister in charge of coordinating no-deal planning, appeared on the BBC's political review TV program "The Andrew Marr Show" on Sunday.

No deal Brexit is at the top of the agenda in Parliament this week as rebel Tory and opposition MPs are set to attempt to pass legislation that would legally require the government to delay Brexit if a deal can not be reached.

"Indeed, the Government's own assessments showed that the flow of goods through the channel crossings could be reduced by 40-60% from day 1, as would the "availability and choice" of some foods", the spokesperson said.

According to the Financial Times, the Food and Drink Federation also expressed similar concerns, saying a no-deal Brexit will have a major impact on the availability of fresh food and drink, particularly fruit and vegetables.

With the October 31 deadline still looming without any clear resolution, experts across all business sectors are trying to "wargame" possible scenarios following a no-deal Brexit, with few projections painting a positive picture.

When pressed on whether leaving without a deal would mean prices rises, Gove said: "I think there are a number of economic factors in play".
