USB4 is official and it's basically just Thunderbolt 3

USB4 is official and it's basically just Thunderbolt 3”

For the first time, Thunderbolt 3 is to become standard in USB4 after Intel donated the spec it created to USB-IF.

Anyway, the USB Implementers Forum, the non-profit that presides over the USB standard has now published the USB4 specification, and if you were hoping that it would make things clearer and easier for the general populace, well then I don't know what to tell ya' buddy.

USB 4 will increase transfer speeds compared to USB 3.0, and use the USB-C physical interface.

The latter of those - the USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 specification - offers up to 20Gbps via two individual 10Gbps lanes. However, the advantage in the case of USB 4 is that it represents a platform that's way more popular than Thunderbolt and present on virtually every consumer electronic device that exists in the market right now.

Regarding USB4 specification's optional support for Thunderbolt 3, USB-IF anticipates PC vendors to broadly support Thunderbolt 3 compatibility in their USB4 solutions given Thunderbolt 3 compatibility is now included in the USB4 specification and therefore royalty free for formal adopters.

USB4 is done, the group developing the next version of the immensely successful USB connector technology said Tuesday.

However, there is one issue that hasn't been fixed yet - the Type C connector. So, whether it's a smartphone or PC, the Type-C looks the same - even when it has a different heart. And if all goes to plan, it should start making it safer for device makers to stop offering devices, chargers and other devices that use old-style rectangular USB-A or the smaller USB Micro B ports. Probably, we will have to wait until 2020 when we will finally be able to use these faster USB ports.

If you're thinking this feels a bit too soon after USB 3.x (or whatever it's called this week) then you'd be right.
