AIDA team-up aims to test asteroid deflection

AIDA team-up aims to test asteroid deflection”

The focus of the upcoming mission will be the sub-kilometer near-Earth asteroid Didymos and its moon.

Researchers and engineers from the two agencies are meeting in Rome next week to discuss an idea they believe is a viable method to protect our planet, according to BGNES. It will take place on September 11 to 13 at the Aula Ottagona in central Rome.

The so-called Asteroid Impact Deflection Assessment (AIDA) would target the smaller body of the double Didymos asteroids orbiting between the Earth and Mars, with one spacecraft dedicated to knocking it off course and another to survey its remains once it crashes. Then a second spacecraft will survey and examine the crash site and gather the highest possible data on the effect of this collision.

The resulting impact will then be recorded by the ESA's Hera mission.

'A global effort is the suitable method ahead - planetary defence is in everybody's curiosity'.

NASA has contributed to AIDA, and its contribution is called the Double Asteroid Impact Test or DART spacecraft.

The spacecraft will likely be accompanied on its mission by a tiny, extra satellite tv for pc often known as LICIACube - the Mild Italian CubeSat for Imaging of Asteroids - which can report the second that DART strikes the asteroid.

After this, Hera will play its half.

The ESA craft is presently in its ultimate design section, with European area ministers anticipated to resolve whether or not to green-light building of the auto in the course of the Area19 Ministerial Convention in Madrid, Spain, in November 2019. This spacecraft is under construction and will launch in the summer of 2021.

An artist's concept shows the European Space Agency's AIM mission reaching asteroid Didymos. Didymos is a near-Earth asteroid system.

In outcome, the smaller physique orbits on the low velocity of some centimetres per second - that means that the moon's orbit can feasibly be shifted in a significant method.

"DART can perform its mission without Hera-the effect of its impact on the asteroid's orbit will be measurable using Earth ground-based observatories alone", Ian Carnelli from the Hera team said in a statement.

'However flying the 2 missions collectively will significantly amplify their general data return. And our mission will test a variety of important new technologies, including deep space CubeSats, inter-satellite links and autonomous image-based navigation techniques, while also providing us with valuable experience of low-gravity operations.

Thankfully, however, NASA boffins spotted the inbound asteroid in the nick of time and were able to calculate that it will pass us by harmlessly in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
