CDC, FDA Open Investigation Into Vaping-Related Lung Disease

CDC, FDA Open Investigation Into Vaping-Related Lung Disease”

But some vaping products have been found to contain other potentially harmful substances, including flavoring chemicals and oils used for vaping marijuana, experts say.

Between Thursday and Tuesday, 298 patients across 25 states, including OH, were hospitalized with severe pulmonary illness after vaping tobacco products or dabbing marijuana oils, extracts or concentrates, SCPH said in a news release.

Additional pulmonary illnesses are also under investigation by the CDC and the FDA. That story said a 19-year old man in Delaware County is on life support and in a medically induced coma due to a mysterious lung problem that his family blames on vaping.

However, the agencies say more information is necessary in order to conclude whether the lung illnesses are connected to a specific product.

"Vaping is not safe".

Last week federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials said they're looking at 215 possible cases across 25 states. And officials recommended people concerned about the health risks "consider refraining from using e-cigarette products".

The Ohio Department of Health has asked health-care providers to contact their local health department if they see patients with suspected, unexplained serious pulmonary illness who use vaping products.

Investigators from the OHA Public Health Division reported that the man had "recently used an e-cigarette or vaping device" bought from a cannabis dispensary. Revenues would go to the Oregon Health Authority for medical and healthcare-related programs such as the state's Medical Assistance Program, mental health programs, and other programs concerning tobacco and nicotine health issues.

Patients are exhibiting symptoms including cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, in some cases requiring hospitalization.

U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden of OR said he will introduce legislation next week that would tax e-cigarettes in the same way as traditional cigarettes to reduce the appeal to teenagers who are increasingly taking up the popular smoking alternative.

The CDC also said people should not buy vaping products off the street or ones that have been modified. "A lot of attention is given to the e-cigarettes and [their] use by young people in the context of tobacco; we don't talk a lot about vaping marijuana, but we should". "We have no long-term data to see what the effects are going to be for people".

Last month, the Illinois Department of Public Health announced the first such death amid a growing number of similar lung illnesses across the country.

"We don't yet know the exact cause of these illnesses - whether they're caused by contaminants, ingredients in the liquid or something else, such as the device itself", says Thomas.
