Health officials in BC continue to monitor the dangers of vaping”

Chapman said standard treatments, including antibiotics and oxygen support, in some cases did not stop the symptoms, and a few teens experienced respiratory failure and had to be placed on ventilators.

Exercise authority and promulgate rules to safeguard properly the public health; to prevent the spread of diseases and the existence of sources of contamination; and to implement and carry out the powers and duties vested by law in the department.

"These cases are extremely complex to diagnose, as symptoms can mimic a common infection yet can lead to severe complications and extended hospitalization", Chapman said. The 193 figure included unconfirmed cases, health officials previously told reporters.

Children, however, are a different story: in 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that upwards of 4 million middle and high school students now use tobacco products.

Officials have not determined what sickened the middle-aged adult, whether the product was contaminated or whether they may have added something to the liquid in the device after buying it, said Dr. Ann Thomas with the Oregon Health Authority. "We don't know what they are cutting it with or anything else".

Oregon's announcement follows the first death tied to vaping-related lung illness reported in IL last month.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported late last week 215 cases of lung illness linked to vaping in 25 states, with other cases being investigated.

"There are chemists who are saying it's the chemical being used as a solvent for the flavouring can be associated with lung damage".

Last week, MDHHS announced an investigation into six lung infections that were tied to e-cigarette and vape use. New York State's Health Department also issued an advisory to try and find a link to the illness.

The American Vaping Association condemned the action.

San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a bill in June that prohibits the sale of e-cigarettes until they have been reviewed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which is expected to complete by 2020.

Investigators have not identified the specific brand or product causing the illnesses, which is accompanied by coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, and in some cases vomiting and diarrhea.

In addition, the agencies vowed to share more information about reported cases of the lung illness with state officials.

Former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said, "We know some of this is associated with THC".

"That's an infringement on adults", he said. Their reasons included that E-Cigarettes are not approved by FDA, long-term health effects are unknown, and apparent marketing to children.
