New York City measles outbreak has ended, health officials say”

The outbreak of a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening disease was heavily concentrated in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, where misinformation about the safety and effectiveness of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine has spread, officials said. "They helped encourage vaccinations and achieve record immunization levels in parts of Brooklyn".

New York City health commissioner Oxiris Barbot called on New Yorkers to continue get their children immunized.

The majority of the cases occurred in Brooklyn, especially in several ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities where some misinformation about the MMP vaccinations was spreading.

"As we head back to school this week, we just remain vigilant".

The officials said two incubation periods since the last reported cases have passed without any new infections. Since it began in October 2018, 654 people were diagnosed with measles.

The outbreak that began previous year led to an emergency order banning unvaccinated children and adults from entering schools in certain zip codes, primarily in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Vaccinations got the unsafe outbreak under control, according to city officials. "While its vaccination rates have always been high, worldwide travel and a close-knit, family-centered structure left our community particularly vulnerable to the measles, a highly contagious disease", said Avrohom Weinstock, the leader of Agudath Israel of America.

"There may no longer be local transmission of measles in New York City, but the threat remains given other outbreaks in the US and around the world", Barbot said.

She said vaccination coverage has increased significantly since the city's emergency vaccination order.

In June, New York become the fourth US state to revoke the religious exception for vaccines, following on the heels of Mississippi, California and West Virginia. More than 26,000 children in public and private schools and day care centers had previously gone unvaccinated for religious reasons, according to the state Health Department. New York City officials have urged travelers to check with healthcare providers prior to worldwide travel.
