NRA 'domestic terrorists,' San Francisco leaders say in vote

NRA 'domestic terrorists,' San Francisco leaders say in vote”

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors has declared the National Rifle Association (NRA) a "domestic terrorist organization" after the July shooting in Gilroy, Calif., that left three people and the gunman dead.

It was passed weeks after a mass shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in the San Francisco Bay Area, where three people were killed and 12 were injured.

'The NRA has it coming to them, and I will do everything that I possibly can to call them out on what they are, which is a domestic terrorist organization, ' she continued.

Supervisors unanimously adopted the resolution, which also calls on the city and county to "take every reasonable step to limit" organizations that do business with San Francisco from also working with the NRA, The San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Supervisor Catherine Stefani told reporters that she had chose to write the declaration after the shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival.

San Francisco's legislative body has challenged other American cities and states to follow its lead and formally condemn the National Rifle Association (NRA).

The resolution, which passed Tuesday and says the U.S.is "plagued by an epidemic of gun violence", accuses the NRA of using "its considerable wealth and organization strength to promote gun ownership and incite gun owners to acts of violence".

The resolution starts by citing the Declaration of Independence's statement that life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are unalienable rights before seguing to the Constitution stating that the United States was founded to establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, and promote the general welfare.

'People are dying every day in this country, and doing nothing is not an option, and that is what the NRA continues to do, ' Stefani slammed.

The partisan battle over gun control has escalated in recent weeks due to mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, Dayton, Ohio and, most recently, Odessa and Midland, Texas.

The NRA has been at the center of political tensions in recent years as horrific acts of gun violence continue to regularly punctuate the political conversation.

Supervisor Stefani said she doesn't want this to end with this declaration.

Noted gun violence expert Dr. Garen Wintemute talks about why gun ownership is a medical issue that doctors need to discuss with patients on Friday, Nov. 30, 2018.

In response, the NRA fired back at the resolution as a "ludicrous" exercise and waste of government time that could've been better spent addressing the city's myriad of social issues.

The NRA responded by calling the resolution a stunt that was distracting from the city's myriad of social problems.
