Stars boycott South Africa over xenophobic attacks”

The Zambia National Students Union (ZANASU) has officially written to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, warning him that the inaction by the ANC Government over the ongoing xenophobic attacks against foreign nationals is threatening the South African investment and business interests in other countries.

Shops cautiously began to open again, as some residents sifted around in wrecked stores, rummaging for food and anything usable.

Africans have come out to boycott South Africa after days of looting and violence targeting foreigners in which five people died.

"Taking action against people from other nations is not justified and should not be allowed in our handsome country", he said on the sidelines of the WEF conference. "We are not the only country that has become home for people fleeing".

The influx has led to sporadic outbreaks of violence against foreign businesses, sparked by the perception that jobs are being taken away from South Africans.

"Our action is based on what has happened across the country in reaction to the xenophobic attacks in South Africa". Almost one in three of South Africans are unemployed.

Nigerian police said on Wednesday that security had been strengthened around South African businesses.

The vandals attacked numerous South African-owned businesses in Nigeria, including South African telecom giant MTN, supermarket chain Shoprite and clothing retailer PEP.

Pandor says Nigeria needs to help address the belief that its countrymen are involved in criminal activities.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari's government summoned South Africa's envoy to the World Economic Forum (WEF) on Tuesday and said it would dispatch a delegation to Pretoria to express "deep concern" over attacks on Nigerians, AFP reported.

South African police, who have arrested hundreds in connection with the attacks, said they found two burnt bodies on Thursday in the Gauteng township of Katlehong, one of the areas that has seen rioting.

Botswana meanwhile issued a travel advisory warning its citizens to "exercise extreme caution" and remain vigilant at all times in South Africa.

In Zambia, about a thousand students demonstrated on Wednesday outside the South African embassy in Lusaka, as President Edgar Lungu urged measures to prevent xenophobia from escalating into "genocide".
