Nadal cruises into semifinals, will face Berrettini

Nadal cruises into semifinals, will face Berrettini”

Three of Nadal's 18 majors have been won in NY and he is a heavy favourite to close within one of Roger Federer's record men's tally of 20 Grand Slam singles titles.

The 33-year-old Spaniard, forced to retire from last year's semi-finals with knee pain, is feeling healthy now and ready to pounce upon Italy's 24th-seeded Matteo Berrettini.

Rafael Nadal said he felt "in good shape" after advancing to the semi-finals of the US Open with a battling 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 win over Argentine 20th seed Diego Schwartzman.

Nadal, though, is closing in on a fourth championship at the US Open and his 19th at all majors, which would move him within one of Federer's record for men.

This time, on a muggy night with the humidity above 50%, the left-hander raised some concern by having a trainer come out to rub a cream into that forearm during a changeover early in the third set.

In a recent interview with Reuters, the former World No.1 said: "Sure, it has been hard for American men to win majors but it has been hard for anyone outside of the top four or five players to win in the last 15 years".

"I'm feeling good. Today was very humid day, very heavy day".

"Like a lion in the middle of the jungle", Schwartzman said of Nadal.

"While I was playing I thought, this is one of the best matches I ever saw".

Daniil Medvedev defeated Grigor Dimitrov to reach his first Grand Slam final
Daniil Medvedev defeated Grigor Dimitrov to reach his first Grand Slam final

The three-time US Open champion has lost three semi-finals before now, two to Juan Martin del Potro (including last year's retirement through injury) and once to Andy Murray in 2008. He has big serves, big forehands, and is super confident. I mean, mentally focused, mentally relaxed and mentally always ready to respect every opponent, to play every point, to play every game, to play every set and every match until the end.

Russian fifth seed Daniil Medvedev will face former world No 3 Grigor Dimitrov in the other last four encounter.

Medvedev has meanwhile confirmed his role as risky dark horse as he reached his first career semi at the majors in what could be the culmination of a strong North American summer swing that saw him lift the trophy in Cincinnati and reach the Washington and Montreal finals. I'm trying to keep going, and I'm dreaming as well.

"Hopefully I can show the bright side of myself".

"I was improving my rankings".

"I think the past six, seven months have been pretty rough for me". But I am still really surprised with the way this last four weeks have been going.

He then proceeded to say "Grazie!" over and over during his postmatch interview, thanking "my family at home, my mental coach - they care about me a lot". "I've played him eight times and every important moment, he played better than me".

"Next thing you know, you're nearly end of the year, you have a result like that".
