17000 people stranded at Tokyo airport due to typhoon

17000 people stranded at Tokyo airport due to typhoon”

A typhoon blew across the Tokyo metropolitan area today, killing one person and causing dozens of injuries, while disrupting rush-hour travel and knocking out power.

The storm had headed out to sea by mid-morning but authorities warned that heavy rains were likely to continue for hours, including in Fukushima, the site of the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.

Keisei Electric Railway Co resumed services per its normal schedule, while the East Japan Railway Co, which also operates trains from and to the airport near Tokyo, aims to do the same within the day.

More than 130 flights were cancelled and scores of train lines were closed for hours, snarling the morning commute for millions in a greater Tokyo area that has a population of some 36 million.

Authorities issued non-compulsory evacuation warnings to more than 390,000 people in Kanagawa, Shizuoka and Tokyo prefectures. Almost 760,000 households were still without electricity in the Tokyo area Monday evening.

The typhoon also damaged rail lines, including a tree fall on a line linking Tokyo to the southern suburbs, towards Yokohama.

More than 30 people have been injured as a result of Faxai and one woman, who was found unconscious in a residential street near central Tokyo, was killed by the storm.

Eddie Jones says England will train indoors on artificial turf if necessary

Before flying out from the United Kingdom yesterday, Jones said that his side would have to be "comfortable with uncomfortable" if they were to win their second-ever World Cup, but it's unlikely he would have expected that discomfort to come so early in their tournament bid.

The typhoon is now forecast to move northeast away from Japan and into the open Pacific over the next day, with maximum wind speeds expected to weaken to 26 miles per hour by Tuesday, according to JMA.

The Australian team's arrival was delayed by the storm.

There are concerns that the storm could worsen already severe food shortages in the country.

Tournament rules say that if a pool match has to be scrapped due to extreme weather, it is classed as a draw, which could have a major impact on what is set to be a very close competition.

Strong typhoon Krosa lashed western Japan in mid-August, bringing strong winds and torrential rain that claimed one life.
