Bahamians Without U.S. Visas Told To Get Off Rescue Ferry

Bahamians Without U.S. Visas Told To Get Off Rescue Ferry”

President Donald Trump defended on Monday the policy requiring Bahamian evacuees to have US visas by claiming without evidence that "gang members" and "drug dealers" were trying to get into the country with the evacuees. On the other hand, "Everybody needs totally proper documentation".

Prakash said Sunrise and allies are planning to rally outside Customs and Border Protection (CBP) offices in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday to demand that the Trump administration "stop turning away people fleeing destruction".

President Donald Trump today said that the U.S. would have to be careful about allowing Bahamian survivors of Hurricane Dorian into the country, warning there could be "very bad people" among them.

Brian Entin, a reporter for WSVN 7 News in Miami who was on the vessel, said "this is not normal" and noted Bahamians can usually travel to the us with just a passport and a printout of their police record.

"CBP was notified of a vessel preparing to embark an unknown number of passengers in Freeport and requested that the operator of the vessel coordinate with US and Bahamian government officials in Nassau before departing The Bahamas", CBP said in a statement Sunday.

"Those evacuating from the Bahamas who are U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents, and those with proper documentation to enter the U.S. are being processed at U.S. Ports of Entry", CBP Acting Commissioner Mark Morgan wrote on Twitter.

"Or put another way, when the president told Bahamians, "We're with you", he may not have fully meant 'with". "If they worked with us, we would have been there to facilitate that process", an official told Entin.

Hundreds of Bahamians attempting to flee the Hurricane Dorian-ravaged islands were booted off a ferry bound for the USA if they did not have a visa to enter, a report said. Such discretion was applied on Friday when about 1,500 evacuees arrived from the islands aboard a cruise ship called Grand Celebration.

Entin told CNN he was on a Balearia ferry from Freeport to Fort Lauderdale when the announcement was made Sunday.

Authorities in the Bahamas have updated the death toll from Hurricane Dorian to 45, one week after the storm battered the archipelago. Thousands of people are missing and an estimated 70,000 Bahamians need food, water or medical attention.

"This is a humanitarian mission, right?"

The only aid they have received so far is from foreign aid groups and US firefighters, said Reckley's husband, Dexter Edwards, a heavy equipment operator. "Whether you have travel documents or not", he said.

A spokesperson for CBP said the 103 Bahamians who were not allowed to travel did not have any kind of identification.

USAID Administrator Mark Green told reporters on Sunday his agency is leading humanitarian relief efforts of the United States government in the Bahamas by providing "lifesaving and life-sustaining assistance: food, water, sanitation, emergency shelter, and medical care needed to facilitate the Bahamian government's response". President Trump announced the abrupt end of negotiations after a plan to meet with representatives of the Taliban and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani at Camp David this week fell through over the weekend.

"As hundreds of thousands of Bahamians seek refuge or start to rebuild after Hurricane Dorian, we can not have the kind of confusion that occurred last night in Freeport".

"This administration has said the words on the Statue of Liberty should be rewritten, and in their actions, they are already changing who we are as a country", he said.
