Boris Johnson to suspend parliament in Brexit run-up

Boris Johnson to suspend parliament in Brexit run-up”

Johnson yesterday lost yet another major vote in Parliament over a bid to call an early election, leaving many to question where this leaves the whole Brexit process.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson suffered a fresh blow after his second attempt to force an early election in the country failed to garner the required two-thirds majority.

Legislators also demanded the government release, by Wednesday, emails and text messages among aides and officials relating to suspending Parliament and planning for Brexit amid allegations that the suspension is being used to circumvent democracy. "It is one of the longest for decades and it represents not just in the minds of some colleagues but huge numbers of people outside, an act of executive fiat", he told a raucous chamber.

If an election were to be held today, Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the Labour Party and a self-declared socialist, would have no chance to become the next prime minister.

Lawson also regards Parliament's recent vote for another extension as helping prove Johnson's point to the British people that "Parliament would do anything it could to block Brexit".

Johnson again rejected the second option on Monday evening.

What if Parliament passes a bill between October 21 and October 31 to revoke Brexit completely? Johnson agreed to go to Brussels, but said he would not ask for another delay to Brexit.

"You could end up with the freakish situation where, let's just suppose the Conservatives manage to win a majority with 35% to 40% of the vote, they will claim a mandate for no-deal when, if you add the votes for all the parties opposed to no-deal together, they will come to more than 50% of the vote".

"There is a silent majority of people in this country who want to move on from this nightmare - who recognize that what's going on is massively damaging to our country, to our worldwide reputation, to our economy", Liberal Democrat lawmaker Norman Lamb said.

The EU says Britain has not produced any concrete proposals for replacing the contentious "backstop", a provision in the withdrawal agreement reached by Johnson's predecessor Theresa May that is created to ensure an open border between EU member Ireland and the U.K.'s Northern Ireland.

The options being entertained, according to British media reports, include the government simply ignoring the law, thus risking jail time for the prime minister, who insists that the prospect of a no-deal Brexit gives him more leverage in negotiations with the EU.

However, he says he believes an agreement is still possible before a summit of European Union leaders in Brussels on 17-18 October, in time to leave on 31 October.

"If absolutely necessary, we will come out with no deal", Johnson said.

Corbyn also called on Johnson to respect the rule of law and ask for an extension from European Union leaders.

The Labour, Liberal Democrats, Scottish Nationalists and Plaid Cymru parties united to prevent Boris Johnson from seeking a fresh poll by voting against or abstaining against it, handing the prime minister his sixth defeat on his sixth vote in six days.

He has also earned the wrath of many Conservatives who have accused him of trying to thwart Brexit by favouring the opposition.

"A no-deal Brexit is really a Trump-deal Brexit", he said.

"We are open to alternatives, but they must be realistic ones, legally binding and workable, and we haven't received such proposals to date".

The turmoil deepened when Bercow announced that he will step down by October 31 at the latest - with a few shots aimed at the government in his speech.

Those calling for the documents to be published say they will show the decision to suspend parliament was politically motivated, as a way to limit discussion on Brexit.

In an election, the hard-liners would seek to capitalize on sentiment that lawmakers are thwarting the will of the voters, who approved a referendum in 2016 to leave the EU.

Under Johnson's premiership, Britain's three-year Brexit crisis has stepped up a gear, leaving financial markets and businesses bewildered by an array of political decisions that diplomats compare to the style of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Plaid has attempted impeachment against a prime minister before - Tony Blair over the Iraq War - it was a long shot then and remains so now.
