Huge crowd takes Hong Kong protest message to US consulate

Huge crowd takes Hong Kong protest message to US consulate”

The throngs of protesters appealed to Trump to "stand with Hong Kong" and "liberate Hong Kong" and make sure that Congress pass the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019.

Activists want the U.S. to pass the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, which would impose punitive measures on Hong Kong government officials who suppress human rights in the city, freezing their US-based assets and deny them entry to the US.

The protests, which took place in Hong Kong's central business district, were dispersed by police firing tear gas. Wong, a leader of Hong Kong's 2014 pro-democracy protest movement, was among several people detained last month and was charged with inciting people to join a protest in June.

Hong Kong returned to China in 1997 under a "one country, two systems" formula that guarantees freedoms not enjoyed on the mainland.

Protests erupted exactly three months ago over a controversial extradition bill that would have allowed criminal suspects in Hong Kong to be sent to mainland China to face trial. The US State Department has warned its citizens in the territory that China has begun a propaganda campaign "falsely accusing" Americans of fomenting the unrest.

"This is the biggest impact facing Hong Kong in many, many years since the Second World War", Li said in reference to the months-long unrest while attending a religious event Sunday, according to a video clip posted on Apple Daily. The United States is now locked in trade negotiations with China, and it's possible Trump Administration officials feel taking a hard line on the Hong Kong protests could imperil talks and force a trade war.

Fitch Ratings downgraded Hong Kong's long-term foreign currency issuer default rating from "AA+" to "AA", citing greater Chinese influence and ongoing unrest as major headwinds.

"It is expected that I will be released after a hearing tomorrow morning so I hope fellow friends don't worry too much", he said in the statement.

Protesters urged the US Congress to quickly pass the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act when it reconvenes this week.

As dissent in Hong Kong and the accompanying police crackdown continue, Lam and her government face the possibility of growing global criticism, particularly from the United States, where lawmakers have returned from their summer recess.

"That's why we need foreign countries to help monitor the situation in Hong Kong, we need them to put pressure on the government".

Anti-police sentiment in Hong Kong has emerged as a lightning rod in the protests that have expanded beyond activists to include shopkeepers, civil servants and students.

Students in black, join a strike on the first day of school at the Chinese University in Hong Kong.

In a separate incident on Sunday, police lobbed a teargas grenade at a group of mostly reporters from inside a subway station without warning, scorching the press vest of an Australian photojournalist, Jared Stone, after it exploded.

The protests, peaceful for the most part, have however seen an escalation by the most radical groups, with the police responding with disproportionate use of force: tear gas, water cannons, and mace.

Meanwhile, former Umbrella movement leader Joshua Wong was redetained as he tried to board a flight to Germany on Sunday, only to be released later after the judge corrected a mistaken date on his conditions of bail.

Later in the evening, the main subway line in downtown Hong Kong was closed along with major boulevards, snarling traffic and making it hard to access major hotels.

"Preliminary legal advice suggested that the court had acknowledged and approved my trips to Germany and the US when it granted bail on August 30", he said in a statement.
