Hurricane Dorian Was Fueled by The Effects of Climate Change”

In Halifax, residents were comparing the storm to hurricane Juan, a Category 2 hurricane that hit Halifax early on September 29, 2003.

The Outer Bank islands of North Carolina were also struck by Dorian, leaving four dead.

The National Hurricane Center reported that the storm could be caused by two competing factors, the first is a tropical wave nearing the Caribbean.

We all saw what happened with Hurricane Dorian's forecast, so trying to get a good handle where this next system is going to go, especially over a week out, is almost impossible. Five lives were lost in the United States due to the storm, and one person was killed in Puerto Rico. It's about 1,000 miles west of the Azores in the North Atlantic and is moving north-northeast at a fast clip of 21 mph with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph, as of Monday's 5 p.m. forecast. That's especially the case near and north of the Bahamas, where Dorian sat for over a day. According to the local authorities, close to a thousand Canadian soldiers will be assigned the task of clearing roads, evacuating residents trapped in flooded areas, and help in the restoration of electricity.

One thing is certain however, Dorian will go down as one of the biggest storms to hit Nova Scotia and the Maritimes. Halifax is a major economic centre in Atlantic Canada, with a large concentration of government services and private sector companies.

In New Brunswick, more than 80,000 homes and businesses were without electricity at the peak of the storm on Saturday.

So far, Dorian's greatest pinch was experienced in the Bahamas last week.

"For the people that live out that way, we urge you ... to move yourself to someplace safe", said Erica Fleck, Halifax's assistant chief of community risk reduction. At the southern end of the city, a roof was torn from another apartment complex.

Nearly 200,000 properties and businesses ended up still without energy in Nova Scotia Monday afternoon right after a peak of about 400,000 ended up out Saturday. As people hurried from the building, firefighter Jeff Paris said those forced from their homes would be taken to emergency shelters. By the time the storm reached the provinces, winds had picked up to 155 km/h, causing trees to fall, and some cranes to snap over buildings.
