Inside the quest to build the world's fastest auto

Inside the quest to build the world's fastest auto”

Tuned for 1,600 horsepower, the Chiron Super Sport 300+ packs 100 horsepower more than its "regular" sibling.

Earlier this year, Bugatti once again broke the record for the fastest road vehicle. Most recognized records require the average speed of two runs in opposite directions to account for wind and surface variations.

Besides the aero-efficient bodywork, the production model is identical to the record auto with the same vertically stacked tailpipes and aggressive rear diffuser.

The standard model is black with orange stripes like the record auto, but buyers can have them outfitted pretty much any way they want, because you get what you pay for and they're paying a lot. At the front you can recognise the special model by the Bugatti "Macaron" logo made of genuine silver and black enamel. This variant of the Bugatti Chiron has an 8.0-liter quad turbo W16 engine, which provides 1,578 bhp power. The interior is dominated by black carbon, leather and Alcantara in Beluga Black, complemented by colour highlights in Jet Orange.

While there has not been any official confirmation as yet, Instagram account Miller Motor Cars revealed an announcement was made during Bugatti's Grand Fete 110th anniversary celebration at its Molsheim factory.

Bugatti is commemorating its epic 300mph run with a limited production version of its record-setting prototype.

Top Gear has reported Bugatti may give buyers the option of specifying a roll-cage and removing the speed limiter, as well as potentially giving buyers the opportunity to take their Chirons to Ehra-Lessien to follow in Andy Wallace's tire tracks.

In an interview with journalists French edition Motor1 CEO Stephan Winkelmann said that the production hypercar will start in 2021. That said, Top Gear reckons that there's an option for buyers to return the vehicle to Wallace-spec, should they feel the need to emulate his nibbs at Ehra-Lessien. Ride height has been put back to standard. Owners may even have the opportunity to test out their cars at VW Group's Ehra-Lessien test track.
