John Bercow Announces He Will Stand Down In An Emotional Speech”

Ms Harman told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "It is the job of the Speaker to make sure that Parliament, by its majority, has its say, and I think that's what John Bercow has sought to do".

"He has to keep proceedings going, and there was a lot of noise, I was disagreeing with the leader of the SNP".

Mr Bercow announced he is to stand down as Speaker on October 31 - the current Brexit deadline.

The Speaker of the Commons is an MP who stands in general elections but is usually unopposed by the major political parties.

"If the House does not so vote, I have concluded that the least disruptive and most democratic course of action would be for me to stand down at the close of business on Thursday, October 31".

"This is far preferable to a contest at the beginning of a parliament when new MPs will not be similarly informed and may find themselves vulnerable to undue institutional influence".

"This Parliament is stronger for your being speaker".

A member of parliament since 1997, he has been speaker since June 2009 and has often been a thorn in the government's side.

In recent months he has also come under fire for a series of controversial rulings in the chamber which were widely considered to favour Remain supporters. "Our democracy is the stronger for your being the Speaker", Mr Corbyn said.

Speaking after the Strangford MP had spoken on behalf of the DUP in wishing Mr Bercow well, the Speaker said: "Colleagues, I think you'll forgive me if I say this very publicly to the honourable gentleman, the Member for Strangford".

The precise timing of the prorogation, brought immediately after tonight's planned vote on whether to hold a snap general election, appears to be meant to focus the minds of Parliamentarians.

But Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage tweeted "good riddance".

Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the Labour MP for Chorley and now the Deputy Speaker, told the Home Affairs Select Committee in March 2017 that Jewish female MPs "face the worst of it" and that he had personally met several to discuss their security.

As a prominent Remain campaigner in the European Union referendum, she is likely to face accusations of bias from Eurosceptics in the Commons, but she insisted she would be able stand back from political issues if she became Speaker.

Describing how Parliamentary security prioritises MPs thought to be most at-risk, he added: "We take it on board, and that is the starting point: the one who is most likely to be under attack and vulnerable".
