OR joins almost every state in Google antitrust investigation

OR joins almost every state in Google antitrust investigation”

"This adds a whole different level of complexity for both Facebook and Google to deal with because they're dealing with potentially many different investigations, not all of which may be coordinated", said Robert Litan, former Clinton-era deputy assistant attorney general in the DOJ's antitrust division.

A separate group of eight state attorneys general, led by NY, joined by the District of Columbia, announced on Friday it was investigating Facebook.

In a September 9 statement, New York Attorney General Letitia James said Google's widening control could be a danger to consumers' rights.

However, Google has denied the allegations, saying its services help people, create more choice and support thousands of jobs and small businesses across the United States.

"If Google has gained its advantages in the marketplace through free and fair competition, then let the chips fall where they will", said Hill. (Alabama and California are the two states not participating.) The states' action is independent of several different federal actions, participating attorneys general stressed.

Google is set to face a major investigation from the USA government concerning possible monopoly abuse in the advertising industry. Will Castleberry, Facebook's vice president for state and local policy, said last week that the company would cooperate with state attorneys general.

Top legal officials from dozens of U.S. states were set to unveil a probe of Google over allegations of "anticompetitive behavior", days after a separate coalition announced a similar investigation of social networking giant Facebook.

However, its share of the market has declined in recent years, as companies such as Amazon attract more spending.

"We have always worked constructively with regulators and we will continue to do so", it said.

My general position is that when Microsoft was broken up, it allowed the likes of Google to emerge, which gave us new and better technology, like Google Search, and Android (Axios). "We are talking about a lot of resources now being brought together going up against Google". An antitrust investigation like this could run parallel with a federal case, causing considerable headaches for Google.

The vast majority of revenue for Google and its parent company, Alphabet, comes from online ads. He said there is a "presumption" of innocence in such an investigation but still said there is a "pervasiveness" to complaints about Google's business practices.

"But we are acting as one today", he said.

Appearing on the steps of the Supreme Court, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said Google "dominates all aspects of advertising on the internet and searching on the internet", though he said it is an investigation for now and not a lawsuit. As he said at the conference, according to the Washington Post, the probe may extend to other parts of Google's business, but the first focus will be on ads.

Facebook and Google have also been among tech companies criticized by Democrats running for president in 2020.

Most recently, 43 states and Puerto Rico sued Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd and 19 other drugmakers in May, accusing them of scheming to inflate prices and reduce competition for more than 100 generic drugs.
