Serena Williams faces 19-year-old Andreescu in US Open final

Serena Williams faces 19-year-old Andreescu in US Open final”

And for Serena Williams, the wait for a record-tying major continues.

"Get used to it", Andreescu replied with a smile.

Andreescu, the 19-year-old Canadian, beat Williams 6-3, 7-5 to win the US Open on Saturday for her first Grand Slam title in her first career appearance at the event. It just wasn't in the three most significant matches of her return so far: three Grand Slam finals, three losses.

Andreescu, the self-assured daughter of Romanian immigrants, has quite a story, and she kept the 37-year-old Williams from adding another triumphant chapter to a fine one of her own.

"I can definitely get used to this feeling". This marks the first time that any man or woman has won the U.S. Open in their first outing. Williams erased that by snapping a forehand return victor off a 105 miles per hour serve. If she needs to play the rally, she can play the rally.

The Canadian stemmed the bleeding by holding for 6-5 and an errant Williams backhand handed Andreescu two more shots at the title.

Andreescu is 8-0 against top 10 players this year and has not lost a completed match since March 1.

Williams praised her opponent ahead of the match. Incidentally, Williams was the runner up that too against Sharapova.

Williams, who had dominated throughout the last two weeks in NY, called Saturday's match her worst performance of the Grand Slam. "I'm sure she's going to bring her "A" game", Andreescu said. "It's hard to know that you could do better". "Who knows? Maybe I can be even better".

Serena Williams hits the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium Saturday in her latest bid to capture another historic record with her U.S. Open finals matchup against Canadian Bianca Andreescu.

While there was a loud applause when Andreescu was introduced before the match, the ovation for Williams was deafening. In the second set I felt her kind of get tight at 4-1. I just tried to breathe as much as I could from the moment I woke up until the match. "If anyone could win the tournament, outside of Venus, I'm happy it's Bianca". Ms. Williams had to drop out of the Rogers Cup last month due to an injury and was on the bench in tears. But as she had against Townsend, Andreescu sorted herself out, went back on offence, and took the two sets she needed. The Canadian was leading 3-1.

She has a varied style, an in-your-face attitude - her coach, Sylvain Bruneau, called her a "street fighter" - and an ability to come through in the clutch, going 13-3 in three-setters this year.

"She's got a big final coming up, but there will be a lot of us cheering for her". But Andreescu is wary of that comparison. "Serena said", Bianca showed an incredible game. "I'm just glad with how I managed really".

Serving at 2-4, Williams erased five break points with a combination of aces and booming groundstrokes but Andreescu was knocking on the door once more as the American served to stay in the set. Williams did herself no favours by double-faulting eight times throughout the match.

Williams - desperate to equal Margaret Court's 24 Grand Slams - had the ideal start at this event, beating Maria Sharapova in the first round.

So what has changed to make Serena a [1.37] favourite here - over a 20 tick movement in her favour - from that match in Toronto?

Asked if she expected to win the US Open, Andreescu was frank. But she's stuck on 23 Grand Slams. "I'm still doing what I can do". The Canadian participant earned her very first career Commended Slam championship at the US Open on September 7 in Unique York City in opposition to the one-and-handiest Serena Williams!

Even Prime Minister Justin Trudeau weighed in with a tweet today: "You'll have a whole country with you tomorrow, @Bandreescu_!"
